Some of my students who had previously struggled to find books they enjoyed discovered an entirely new love for reading. A few students became so interested in biographies that they read almost my entire collection! I created a Biography Challenge that encouraged students to learn about influential people, important events, and time periods they had never encountered before. Every student in my class read at least two biographies and then reflected and wrote about the historical time period, the challenges the person faced, and the influence that individual had on society. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and insight were incredible to see.\r\n\r\nThese books also gave my students a window into cultures, experiences, and perspectives beyond their own. As they read about people from different countries, backgrounds, and moments in history, they began asking deeper questions and making connections between the past and the world they live in today. History became more than dates and events. It became the stories of real people who faced challenges, made difficult choices, broke barriers, and changed the world. Students began to recognize how culture, history, and individual experiences shape people and communities, helping them develop greater empathy and understanding for others. They were able to make connections between historical people and themselves. \r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful parts of this project was seeing the learning extend beyond our classroom. I allowed students to take the books home, and parents shared how grateful they were to see their children choosing to read on their own and then starting thoughtful conversations with their families. Students talked about different cultures, historical events, and the people who had influenced them, while also thinking about the people who influence their own lives. These donated books did so much more than add titles to our classroom library—they sparked a love of reading, encouraged curiosity, opened conversations, and helped my students understand the world around them just a little bit better. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity these books gave my students to read, discover, question, connect, and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1735532443753,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-american-history-to-life/8949002/","projectTitle":"Bringing American History to Life!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Monique Chapman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8279020_orig.png?crop=1246,1246,x0,y24&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1642575785076","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-monique"},{"teacherId":4588481,"projectId":10239667,"letterContent":"My students used the lined handwriting whiteboards during our daily phonics, writing, and word-building lessons. One of my favorite moments was watching students practice forming letters and writing words on their own boards while I walked around the room providing feedback. When a student struggled with a letter, they were able to erase it, try again, and immediately see their improvement. The reusable boards made practice feel less intimidating and much more fun.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the whiteboards, they were excited to have their own special writing tool. They loved being able to write, erase, and start over, and they especially enjoyed showing me their work. The lines on the boards gave them a visual guide for letter size and placement, which helped many students become more confident in their handwriting.\r\n\r\nOur next steps were to continue using the boards as we strengthened foundational reading and writing skills. As students learned new sounds and spelling patterns, they used the boards to practice letters, words, and sentences.
