There was an immediate change in attitude by them since they saw many titles that were of high interest to them. Because of you, we were able to buy a full class set of novels for our next unit. For a lot of my students, school can sometimes feel like a place where they have to make do with less because they are in a small group class: photocopies, shared materials, or old books that are falling apart.\r\n\r\nHanding each student a fresh, crisp book didn't just give us a tool for learning; it told these kids that they are worth the investment. It showed them that there are people out there, strangers they haven't even met, who believe they deserve the best resources possible.\r\n\r\nMy students have been loving the novel \"The One and Only Ivan\" and it has sparked fantastic conversations about friendship and the way we treat animals in our society. I am forever grateful for your donation and what is has done for my freshman students who are adjusting to high school in a world that sometimes feels against them.","fullyFundedDate":1759774018596,"projectUrl":"project/special-ed-students-need-books-to-access/9794544/","projectTitle":"Special Ed Students Need Books to Access Grade-Level Concepts","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Polodna","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4967113_orig.jpg?crop=1648,1648,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1576858166891","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4967113"},{"teacherId":9772174,"projectId":9393380,"letterContent":"Our students are very happy with the new graphic novels and I cannot thank you enough for making this project possible. For many of my newcomer English learners, reading long prose can feel overwhelming—but graphic novels invite them in. The images support comprehension, the dialogue builds confidence, and the story structure helps them practice essential literacy skills such as sequencing, identifying character traits, understanding conflict, and making inferences with visual clues. With these books, my students are learning how to annotate, summarize, and discuss literature in English while feeling successful, capable, and proud.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is loud, collaborative, and joyful. Students read in pairs, stop to sketch vocabulary, act out scenes, and use WIDA-aligned sentence starters to talk about character motivations and themes. The novels have been especially powerful because students can see strength, courage, and resilience. The visuals help them follow complex plot events, and the superhero narrative keeps them motivated to keep turning the pages, even when the vocabulary is challenging.\r\n\r\nSome students have connected with these books in a particularly meaningful way. One student who rarely spoke in class began volunteering to read dialogue aloud because the speech-bubble format felt less intimidating. Another student shared that Wonder Woman reminds her of a strong woman in her family, and she has been eagerly reading ahead each day. \r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students feel seen, supported, and excited about reading.
