Today I heard a student say \"this squishy is so worth it!\" multiple times. He got so many of his peers excited to win as well. The class prizes have encouraged students to engage more and help each other out and turn in exemplar work. \r\n\r\nStudents are also using the prizes during class as fidgets (the slow rise squishy) and it's a silent way for them to move their hands and still focus during class. \r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials for the classroom, there were a lot of oohs and ahhs. My 6th graders and 7th graders were both equally excited. \r\n\r\nMy next steps are to encourage students to request fidgets to use during class if they want and to continue to participate in science with fun incentives. \r\n\r\nI appreciate this donation and the impact for students was immediate. In the images I've uploaded, it shows a specific activity students were doing to practice CER called Soup, Salad, Sandwich. On tables, students worked with their partners to write whether that food item was a soup, salad, or sandwich. Then out loud, they would explain to their partner their evidence. For example, \"My claim is a chicken nugget is a sandwich. My evidence is that it has a breaded outer layer and an inner layer, just like a sandwich.\" \r\n\r\nMy students were initially surprised to hear that we received a donation of markers that could be used to draw on the table. I emphasized that they are different from normal markers and are special because someone gave them to us and that they will be easily erasable after we're done with the activity. Students were extremely excited and engaged once we started drawing on the tables. They also got really into the CER aspect of whether the food item was a soup, salad, or sandwich. \r\n\r\nI envision using these markers more for other opportunities to review key concepts maybe before an assessment. I can also see them being used during our brain breaks for students to just draw for fun. \r\n\r\nThis donation has had a huge impact on my classroom and my students and I really appreciate it!
