Getting struggling readers to pick up a book and read is a problem that vexes many English teachers. The overarching goal of our ELD department is to help our students increase their reading grade level. Not only does this strategically move students toward getting reclassified but helps them in all their subject areas. One approach for boosting reading proficiency is to expose students to high interest books such as Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone. Research has shown that reading for pleasure is the number one indicator related to improved reading comprehension. The Harry Potter series has overwhelmingly engaged a wide range of readers. It's success can be attributed to many qualities but of great importance is that the books are so readable with memorable characters, vivid descriptions and a school setting. Our current school library due to lack of space and funding, has a limited supply of traditional books in class sets. Often these books have already been read by students in the English classes, which ELD3 students are also enrolled in. Our school library only has a few copies of books from the Harry Potter series. I will closely monitor student progress by using the STAR reading test monthly. I'll track specific reading skills for each student: using inference, predicting, visualizing and summarizing. Students will keep a journal to record new words and reflect on their reading. I will divide students to the 4 houses in the series: the Gryffindors, Slytherins, Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs to build in fun competitive activities. The students will cover their books and take care of them so that future classes can enjoy this book.
