The students in my class are resource students enrolled in a separate setting for English language arts and social studies. Oftentimes, they are unable to read memorable grade-level texts such as The Outsiders or The Giver. Whether a writing prompt or a passage, these students require a read aloud from support staff to understand what is being asked. Many texts that are "low leveled" are often written for younger students and will appear "elementary." This inhibits my students from practicing reading because, instead, they will grab a book that "looks cooler." In the end, this causes more harm than good. Our class needs high interest low leveled texts so we can learn in a fun and interesting way. I want my students to think of reading as fun as opposed to a dreaded skill. I want my students to be able to know that they, too, can relate to the text and make connections. Having the appropriate classroom library is the first step to achieving success.
