I am able to use them to rehydrate our clay so the students can learn about the recycling process of clay. Plus, they get to create art from the clay that they rework. I soak the clay in the barrels obtained from this grant. Once the clay is soft and workable, the students scoop out a handful and proceed to wedge it, getting it ready for their project. I love to hear the laughter when the students scoop their hands in the wet clay that is sticky and messy. They are amazed once they go through the wedging process and the clay comes together into a soft, homogeneous clay ball with which they can make their projects.\r\n\r\nThe barrels are good for storing clay for long periods of time with the lids that came with the grant. Plus, the trash barrel dollies are great for moving the barrels with clay around so it is convenient for the students to work with. The barrels, buckets, and dollies are a great addition to the ceramic program we have at our school. Teenagers wrestle with their position in life as they think about college, debt, and the widening distance between those who have and those who only hope. We use it for everything from background music during independent work to audio for shared listening activities, and the quality of sound has made instruction clearer and the atmosphere warmer. The board games have been especially meaningful. Game of Life, in particular, has sparked some of the most honest conversations we have had about money, family, choices, and futures. Students play and then talk, and that combination of low-stakes fun and genuine reflection is something I had been trying to create for years.
