My students enjoyed the seating arrangement during their response-to-intervention time, when we would all sit around the kidney-shaped table while I worked with them on improving their reading and writing. When the students saw that total strangers had cared enough about them to donate money to a project in which they would be more comfortable, they were overwhelmed with gratitude. I did not inform the students about setting up the DonorsChoose project because many of them aren't funded, and I didn't want to raise their hopes unnecessarily. So, when the students saw all of these huge boxes in my room, they were so excited to see them. It was like Christmas morning for them as they opened up those boxes and found all the colorful stools that we would be able to use in the different centers of the room. I wish I had taken pictures of that morning, but like most teaching moments that move so fast, and I was enjoying living the moment, I didn't think about taking pictures until it was over. Each child has written their name and a personal kindness commitment—like saying hello in the morning, including someone who feels left out, or remembering to say please and thank you. Seeing their pledges displayed has helped them take ownership of kindness in a way that feels exciting and real.\r\n\r\nA special classroom moment:\r\nOne of the most powerful moments happened when a group of fourth graders noticed a classmate sitting alone at recess. They remembered their pledge, walked over, and invited him to join their game. Later, they pointed to the pledge wall and said, \"We kept our promise!\" Moments like this remind me that your donation is shaping not just lessons, but real daily choices.\r\n\r\nStudent reactions:\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were so excited—they immediately started brainstorming ways to decorate the pledge wall and asked if they could \"sign their promise\" right away. Many of them proudly showed their families what they had signed during pickup, which made the wall even more meaningful.\r\n\r\nNext steps:\r\nIn December, we'll be rolling out a Kindness Countdown, where each day brings a new kindness challenge. Later in the year, we'll track kindness acts across classrooms, celebrate student leaders in kindness, and expand the pledge wall as new ideas grow.
