My students are using the new ladder ball, Kan Jam, Spikeball, and cornhole equipment during our recreational games unit. These activities give students opportunities to be active while developing communication, teamwork, coordination, strategy, problem-solving, and sportsmanship.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding moments happened when the equipment first arrived. Students immediately recognized several of the games from family gatherings, backyard parties, parks, and time spent with friends. I heard students excitedly say things like, \"We have this at home!\" and \"I play this with my family!\" Seeing their faces light up helped me realize how powerful it can be when students see a connection between what they are learning in PE and their lives outside of school. Students who may not always be excited about traditional competitive sports were especially eager to participate because these games felt familiar and accessible.\r\n\r\nWe have used the equipment to create small-group stations where students rotate between activities, learn the rules, practice skills, and develop strategies with their teammates. As students become more comfortable, they are taking greater ownership of the activities by helping classmates learn the rules, keeping score, encouraging teammates, and solving problems during gameplay. This has allowed me to step back at times and watch students become leaders within their groups.\r\n\r\nThese games have also helped reinforce an important lesson: physical activity does not have to mean playing a traditional sport. Students are discovering recreational activities they can enjoy with siblings, parents, friends, and community members. My hope is that students will take what they have learned in PE and continue being active long after they leave my classroom.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to build on these experiences by having students participate in a recreational games tournament. Students will continue rotating through ladder ball, Kan Jam, Spikeball, and cornhole while working on strategy, communication, and sportsmanship. Students will eventually help organize and officiate games, keep score, and support their classmates. This will give them an opportunity to demonstrate not only their physical skills but also the leadership and interpersonal skills they have developed throughout the unit.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the donors who made this project possible. Your generosity has provided my students with equipment that goes beyond simply giving them something new to play with. It has created opportunities for students to connect with one another, become more confident participants, and discover enjoyable ways to stay active. Most importantly, these games are helping my students understand that physical activity can be fun, social, inclusive, and something they can carry with them throughout their lives.","fullyFundedDate":1699799691802,"projectUrl":"project/resource-room/7993144/","projectTitle":"Resource Room","teacherDisplayName":"Coach Simonini","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8114289_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1633377500848","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8114289"},{"teacherId":528334,"projectId":9927680,"letterContent":"Integrating rich literature with iPad technology transforms classroom learning by pairing deep textual analysis with dynamic, accessible tools.
