Mojave DECA successfully hosted a four-day \"We Care Mental Health Awareness Workshop\" during both lunch periods on campus. With your contribution, students were able to create a welcoming and informative space where peers learned about coping strategies, positive self-talk, and local mental health resources.\r\n\r\nHow we used the new resources:\r\nYour donation helped us design interactive stations, print awareness materials, and supply stress-relief kits for students who attended the workshops. We also used your support to create visual displays and conversation boards that encouraged students to share positive affirmations and self-care tips. The event became a safe and uplifting environment that connected students and promoted emotional wellness.\r\n\r\nA memorable classroom moment:\r\nOne powerful moment came when a group of students began writing \"You Matter\" notes to post on our awareness wall. Watching students take the initiative to support one another. It was a true example of student-led leadership and empathy in action.\r\n\r\nStudent reactions:\r\nStudents commented on how vibrant and welcoming the area looked, and many returned multiple days to participate in different activities. Several students mentioned that it felt good to see their school openly talking about mental health.\r\n\r\nNext steps for our students:\r\nOur DECA members are now planning a follow-up campaign focused on stress management. They'll use what they learned from this project to design digital content, peer-to-peer workshops. These efforts continue to build on the message that mental health matters and that it's okay to reach out for help.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping our students make a lasting impact on campus. Even while our school greenhouse is under construction, we've been growing herbs and fruits like okra, cantaloupe, and Swiss chard. This has given students a chance to connect science lessons to real life and take pride in caring for living things.\r\n\r\nTheir excitement was clear from the moment they first saw the materials. Students eagerly volunteered to water, monitor growth, and check on the plants each day. Some who are usually quiet in class became leaders when it came to plant care, and many have started asking thoughtful questions about soil, growth cycles, and food production. One student summed it up best by saying, \"Green thumbs come from green hearts.\"\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are excited to expand the project into the greenhouse once it's complete next year. Our district, one of the largest in the country, has adopted a very rigid \"canned\" curriculum which really restricts my (and all teachers') ability to make lessons engaging in our own unique ways. We are allowed to bypass the district-mandated plans in our Honors classes with a very limited list of novels. However, most schools in working-class communities, like ours, don't have the funds to suddenly by a whole bunch of new books that weren't already in the department budget.\r\n\r\nAs a result of your generosity, we now have a class set of Oscar Wilde's \"The Picture of Dorian Gray\". In case you're not familiar with it, the novel is basically a satirical critique of the strict social norms that hinder individuals' ability to truly be themselves. While the story was written in the late-1800s as a rebuke of Victorian society, its themes still resonate today- especially with young people. They enjoyed it, and we had a lot of really deep and interesting conversations which helped build their ability to engage in college-level literary analysis. The bottom line is that we had a significantly more interesting and productive quarter than we would have had using the district's curriculum, and we have YOU to thank for that!\r\n\r\nWe sincerely appreciate your support!","fullyFundedDate":1744229916654,"projectUrl":"project/preparing-for-college-with-challenging-l/9138622/","projectTitle":"Preparing for College with Challenging Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Mehrtens","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9356688_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1705545286969","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9356688"},{"teacherId":8127666,"projectId":9112535,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, students are truly thriving in the classroom!
