For some of our learners, having an appropriate way to move, decompress, and regulate their bodies can make a tremendous difference in their ability to return to learning and participate successfully in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe learning locks, positional-word activities, magnetic tracing board, and color and shape manipulatives have given students hands-on opportunities to practice important academic and functional skills. These materials allow us to work on everything from fine-motor development, handwriting, and early literacy to vocabulary, following directions, matching, sorting, counting, and understanding positional concepts.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these materials allow us to meet students where they are. I use these resources every day to help create a cooler, calmer classroom for my students with autism.\r\n\r\nThe biggest difference has been on hot days. There were mornings when we were all hot and sweating by 9:00 a.m., and even days when our district had early releases because of the heat. The air conditioner, fans, and window film have made our classroom much more comfortable. We also use the Weighted Hugimals, handheld fans, and soft lighting when students need help regulating.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were excited to explore them, especially the fans and sensory supports. They have since learned which tools help them feel comfortable and calm.\r\n\r\nRight now, we are continuing to work on communication, independence, and classroom routines. Last year, the presenters comprised our multi-lingual learners. They taught peers and families about their own culture. This year, with your help, we opened it up to the general school population. The students mainly chose to represent their own culture, but some students were excited to teach their peers about new culture that they researched. We had 25 different countries represented from five continents! \r\nThanks to you, students and families were able to show their creativity with the resources you donated. Presentations ranged from elaborate family creations to simple student-created posters. All students were proud of their efforts and excited to share their presentation and knowledge. \r\nOn the day of the fair, visitors, including the rest of the student body, were given passports and traveled around the world visiting all the countries. The presenters shared their creations and stamped the visitor's passports. It was a wonderful event enjoyed by all. The presenters shared their knowledge, and the visitors had a blast learning about different cultures and collecting stamps. \r\nThe event was a resounding success. Many of the students are already planning next year's event, and it seems that next year's fair will be even bigger! Next year, we plan invite all participants to learn about a new culture to present. That way, both participants and visitors will learn even more about our diverse world cultures.\r\nThank you again.
