When the materials arrived, students were excited not just to design but to be part of something meaningful that would be seen and worn by others.\r\n\r\nStudents carefully chose figures that connected to different subjects—science, literature, social justice, athletics, art, and more,knowing their work would spark conversations across the building. Seeing teachers and students wearing the buttons on their lanyards has been incredibly powerful. Students regularly point out when they spot someone wearing one and say, \"I made that.\" It has opened the door for meaningful discussions in classrooms that go far beyond graphic design.\r\n\r\nWhat makes this project special is that it doesn't end when the project ends. These buttons are wearable art, and teachers are continuing to use them as conversation starters in their lessons and discussions. When students first saw the refreshed supplies, they were SO excited! They were flipping through the new colorful journals, choosing materials, and immediately settling in to the beanbags to create. It's become a calm, welcoming corner of the room that students gravitate toward all day long.\r\n\r\nStudents are using the journaling nook during class, before school, at lunch, and after school. They're responding to prompts, experimenting with materials, and finding their own ways to process thoughts and emotions through art. One of my favorite parts of this project has been putting together \"to go\" journaling kits for long weekends and vacations. For some students, home isn't always the easiest place to relax or create, and having art supplies to bring with them gives them a safe, creative outlet when they need it most.\r\n\r\nNext, I'll continue introducing new journaling prompts and techniques to keep students engaged and exploring different ways to communicate visually. This project has shown me just how powerful a simple, creative space with journaling materials can be. For many of them, this was their first experience with printmaking, and having access to these materials made all the difference. Printmaking is such a bold, graphic form of design, and my students loved carving their images and pulling their first prints. Watching their ideas appear on paper for the first time was exciting and empowering.\r\n\r\nThe energy in the classroom was incredible. Students came into class eager to get started! They went straight to their stations as soon as they walked in. Many of our students don't often get the chance to work with traditional art materials like these, so being able to experiment freely and learn through hands-on making meant so much to them. When we brought in the digital component, their excitement grew even more. Editing their prints in Photoshop helped students see how traditional art and digital design connect in real, meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nNext, students will be refining their final pieces and preparing select prints for submission to art shows and competitions. Many are extremely proud of their results, and some have chosen to share their work beyond our classroom. It has become a quiet, mindful place where they can reset, breathe, and put their thoughts somewhere safe.\r\n\r\nBecause many of my students come from low-income households and stressful home environments, finding a calm, comforting space during the school day is incredibly important. The journaling nook has given them exactly that. One moment I will never forget is when a student came into class clearly agitated, sat in the nook to visual journal, and then looked up at me afterward and said, \"I feel better.\" That is the impact of this project: real emotional regulation, real care, real support.\r\n\r\nThe journals, pens, stickers, LED light, and washi tape give students creative freedom to express thoughts they don't always have words for. Seeing them so engaged also inspires me. It pushes me to keep dreaming up more meaningful, SEL-centered opportunities where art and well-being go hand in hand.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue exploring visual journaling with more prompts that help students reflect, express emotions, and build confidence in their artistic voice. Watching them carefully sculpt tiny noses, hairstyles, outfits, and expressions has honestly been very rewarding and amazing. \r\n\r\nThis project has become something special in our classroom. Students have been coming in early before school, staying during lunch, and sticking around after class just to work on their soft sculptures. Some students who usually struggle to stay focused are totally absorbed in the process, which is quiet, calm, and they are proud of their progress. I've even caught kids walking around the room showing their characters off to their friends. They LOVE this project, and that warms my heart as a teacher.\r\n\r\nNext, students will be photographing their finished sculptures and reflecting on how transforming their 2D design into a 3D object changed their ideas, creativity, and confidence. This project opened a door for them in a way I hoped it would, and the pride they feel holding something they created from scratch is what the artist process is all about.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in this idea and in my amazing students. Sometimes you will find a single student quietly sketching, sometimes you will see a small group collaborating, or sometimes by a student who just needs a moment to breathe before returning to their work.\r\n\r\nStudents use this cozy space before school, after school, and throughout the day to draw, work on assignments, create art, write, and sometimes simply reflect. It has transformed our classroom environment into one that feels warm, supportive, and welcoming. It encourages SEL through comfort, connection, and calm, which is such an important part of the art-making process. One student told me, \"This is the only spot where I actually relax during the school day,\" and another said, \"Please tell the donors thank you! This is our favorite place to be!\"\r\n\r\nTeachers who walk by frequently stop in to comment on how inviting and peaceful the space feels. It has led to more connections, more collaboration, and more creativity than I ever expected. Students are respecting it in a way that shows how meaningful it is to them.\r\n\r\nOur next step will be adding a journaling station to give students additional tools to explore mindfulness, reflection, and creativity. Thanks to you, we're already well on our way to making our art room a place where students can relax, reset, and create with confidence.\r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for your support in building this safe and welcoming corner of the classroom!
