We have 140 students working on monoprinting, so you can imagine how much paint we've been going through.\r\n\r\nThe students were SO excited to start experimenting. Each student created three final monoprints, with at least three layers in each print. They worked with different colors, textures, shapes, and stencils to see what they could create.\r\n\r\nThere was definitely a learning curve! Students quickly discovered that too much paint makes a thick, clumpy mess, while too little paint doesn't transfer the pattern very well. It took some trial and error to figure out the right amount. I loved watching them share techniques, help each other, and get excited when they pulled a really good print. Of course, there were plenty of prints that didn't turn out as planned, but that's artmaking. Those prints will later be used in the next part of the project. \r\n\r\nSince I teach graphic design, my students spend a lot of time working on computers. It was great to see them step away from their screens, get a little messy, and try something completely different.\r\n\r\nWe're not done with these prints yet. Next, students will choose one of their monoprints and turn it into a mixed-media piece by adding drawing, painting, collage, or other materials. After that, they'll photograph or scan another print and bring it into design software where they'll experiment with color, layers, text, and digital effects.\r\n\r\nI really like this project because students get to see how traditional artmaking and digital design can work together.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for helping us stock up on paint! Having enough supplies for 140 students to experiment without worrying about running out has been such a help. It actually inspired an entire unit connecting sports, fitness, art, and graphic design!\r\nWe started by exploring some iconic moments in sports and design history. Students learned about legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield, his contributions to Nike, and the impact of the Air Jordan brand and advertising campaigns. Inspired by his work, students designed their own sneakers, thinking about color, shape, branding, and what makes an athletic product stand out.\r\nWe also took a deep dive into the art of infographics, studying Richard Saul Wurman's contributions to information design and learning how designers turn complicated information into visuals that are easy to understand. Students explored the graphic design history of the Olympic Games, examining how logos, typography, colors, and symbols help define each event. They then selected a past Olympic Games and created their own redesigned visual identity.\r\nAll of these lessons connected back to the walking pad, which became the catalyst for exploring how fitness and design work together. Students are now using the walking pad to track their time, distance, and pace and turning their own fitness data into creative infographics using Adobe Illustrator.\r\nThe students were SO excited when the walking pad first arrived in our classroom, so curious about how we would tie fitness into an art room. It has been fun watching them realize that graphic design is connected to so many things they already love, especially sports and sneakers!\r\nOur next step is to continue tracking fitness progress while developing and refining their infographic designs.\r\nWhat started as a simple way to bring movement into our classroom has grown into an exciting exploration of sports, design history, creativity, and personal wellness. They are also always out when we work in our visual journals too.\r\n\r\nAnother BIG way we use Sharpies is just for getting ideas down on paper. A lot of our projects eventually end up in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, but I don't want students jumping right onto the computer. We sketch, brainstorm, and work through ideas first, and Sharpies are perfect for that.\r\n\r\nThese definitely aren't supplies that are going to sit around unused.
