This project was designed and developed by our Aspen Challenge Team members, a group of 8 students who competed against teams of students from 18 other Boston Public High Schools. Each team selected one of 5 \"challenges\" and then spent 10 weeks designing a youth oriented solution. Our team chose the Green Space challenge and spent the winter surveying students about what they wanted in the space outside, consulting with experts about feasibility, fundraising for the various projects and then, in the last week before the presentation Showcase, building and decorating the space.\r\nThe \"Sports in the Courtyard\" project was very special to one of our team members in particular, EJM was the captain of the soccer team and continues to coach the boys team even after graduation. He really wants the space to be welcoming for everyone and he knows that for some students, that means soccer balls and basketball hoops. He spent a great deal of time researching the right equipment for our school and was thrilled when it arrived.\r\nThis grant was a true learning experience for our team members and will allow our students to enjoy the space in many diverse ways. Students are able to find their math work and resources with ease. Additionally, the three hole puncher has been a success in my classroom and I have seen less students ask for duplicates of classwork, which has made it so no learning opportunities are missed. Students are submitting much more classwork simply because they haven't lost it! The new Expo markers have made working together and sharing ideas on the board a lot easier and the set of tissue boxes will be helpful in the upcoming colder months. \r\n\r\nBefore we began setting up the binders together, during the first few days of school, we talked about being messy versus organized. Students acknowledged that having the right organizational tools can help them stay prepared and ready to participate in class. Additionally, they stated that it feels good to know where everything is and being able to focus more on the math instead of a mess. When students got to set up their own binders with pencil pouches and card stock dividers, they enjoyed choosing how to decorate their binders, where to put their papers, and choosing the color of their pencil pouch. I hope that this process of them setting up their own binders made them feel proud of their space and responsible for keeping it neat. I already noticed a few students have taken to organizing our shelf every week. \r\n\r\nCurrently, with my eleventh grade students we are learning how to identify geometric and arithmetic sequences. We've started by describing sequences informally, and eventually we will be writing terms of sequences using tables and graphs. We will be using function notation to define sequences recursively and explicitly. Additionally, with my ninth graders, we are working on one-variable statistics. We have been discussing the difference between statistical and non-statistical questions, and classifying data has numerical and categorical. We have been practicing representing and interpreting data through different displays and interpreting the values in context to understand what they really tell us. Your support has made it easier for us to concentrate on these big ideas and to grow as math learners. Many of my students are English Language Learners and come from diverse backgrounds where access to academic tools is limited. Having calculators in class allows them to focus less on getting bogged down by long calculations and more on understanding the concepts behind the math. For example, instead of spending all their energy on arithmetic, they can now explore patterns, test strategies, and check their reasoning—skills that are essential for building confidence in math.\r\n\r\nThe students are especially excited about being able to work through problems more independently. Before, they often had to wait to borrow a calculator or rely on me to check their work, which slowed down the pace of learning. Now, every student has access, and I've seen their enthusiasm grow. One student, who used to shy away from answering questions because he was afraid of making mistakes, now eagerly participates since he can quickly test his ideas on the calculator. It's been wonderful to see that kind of transformation.\r\n\r\nOverall, these calculators have given my students the tools to engage with math on a deeper level and to feel more capable in tackling challenging problems. The sense of pride and independence they feel when using this technology is clear every day in class. Your generous gifts of individual whiteboards, vibrant colored paper, markers, and other materials have already transformed our learning space in the most wonderful way. When my seniors walked in on Day 1 and discovered these fantastic new resources, the energy in the room was electric! They immediately started brainstorming how to use the whiteboards for collaborative literary analysis, and I watched their creative minds spinning as they examined the gorgeous colored paper, already envisioning the poetry chapbooks, character analysis posters, and creative writing projects they could bring to life.\r\n\r\nAlmost nothing excited teachers more than bran new supplies and your generosity will fuel our learning adventures all year long! These supplies will be the heart of so many dynamic activities – from intense Socratic seminar discussions captured on whiteboards to stunning visual representations of themes from books we read, from colorful timeline projects tracing character development to vibrant book recommendation displays that will inspire reading throughout our school. Every single time these amazing young adults pick up those markers to diagram a complex sentence or grab that beautiful paper to create a presentation on social justice themes in literature, they're experiencing the direct impact of your kindness and belief in their potential. \r\n\r\nTHANK YOU for investing in these remarkable students and giving them the tools to express their brilliant ideas in creative, engaging ways.
