Having had intermittent access to Chromebooks over the last few years, I have seen the doors that open up to students who are able to utilize them on a daily basis. I've had students who had never touched a computer become confident enough with one to create her own projects online as well as help others to do their own projects. With the help of online programs such as Duolingo & Quizlet, students are able to focus on their individualized levels of language acquisition. In addition, Quizlet & Kahoot offer students opportunities to be quizzed on material in a fun, fast-paced interactive way. Through services like Google classroom, I can help prepare students for their lives after high school where materials are only presented in digital fashion. Additionally, they are likely to have to submit their work online. Practicing these skills in high school allows them to feel more confident to apply and complete higher education programs. Giving students ability to access the internet everyday allows them to create research projects targeting their own interests and developing & honing their research skills. One example uses Adobe Spark Video. This program allows students to develop their skills in the 4 domains of language: listening, reading, writing & speaking. After reading research about the topic, they create slides with pictures & writing. Then, they record their voices speaking about the topic they've researched. These and many more opportunities become available to my incredibly deserving students when they have daily access to Chromebooks in their classroom!
