By leveraging cooperative games and puzzle-solvers, students develop critical thinking, spatial reasoning, and collaborative problem-solving skills in a format that feels natural to them. For example, multiplayer games require students to communicate in real time, delegate tasks, and negotiate strategies to achieve a shared goal. Far from being a distraction, this technology serves as a highly interactive learning tool that aligns beautifully with modern, game-based learning methodologies, turning the classroom into a dynamic lab where failure is just a data point on the way to success.\r\nThe sheer versatility and tactile nature of the Switch are what ignite the most excitement among the students. They are incredibly enthusiastic about the seamless transition from handheld play to a shared big-screen experience, which mirrors how they naturally interact with modern media. The physical engagement of the Joy-Con controllers—using motion controls to manipulate objects on screen or physically passing a controller to a classmate—makes the learning process tangible. This instant feedback loop keeps energy levels high and deepens their focus, transforming routine lessons into memorable, collaborative events that they genuinely look forward to each day.\r\nThis technology has been a magnificent breakthrough for students who typically face barriers in a traditional learning environment, particularly our neurodivergent learners and those navigating social anxiety. Students with attention or sensory processing differences have deeply warmed to the Switch because its highly visual, tactile, and immediate feedback keeps them anchored and engaged. Furthermore, hesitant or quiet students who usually shy away from group work have found a comfortable, low-pressure bridge to social interaction through cooperative gameplay. In these digital spaces, they naturally step into leadership roles, sharing strategies and guiding their peers, which has built immense confidence that carries over into all areas of their schooling.","fullyFundedDate":1771627628221,"projectUrl":"project/switching-gears-beyond-the-textbook/10106234/","projectTitle":"Switching Gears: Beyond the Textbook","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Yabes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7941106"},{"teacherId":3106994,"projectId":10103705,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation! Because of your generosity, my students have been able to go beyond just reading about emergency care and actually practice it. We've been using the supplies in hands-on activities where students respond to real-life scenarios, like treating cuts, handling sprains, and thinking through what to do in a medical emergency. One of my favorite moments was watching a group of students work through a mock situation together—they were talking each other through the steps, checking for safety, and applying what they had learned with such focus and care. It was clear they understood how important these skills really are.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the excitement in the room was immediate. Students were curious, asking questions, and eager to try everything out. Many of them mentioned that they had never learned these kinds of practical skills before, and it made the experience feel even more meaningful. What really stood out to me was how seriously they approached it—they weren't just \"playing\" with the materials, they were thinking about how they could actually help someone in real life, especially people they care about.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we're building on these skills by working through more detailed scenarios and giving students the chance to take the lead. They'll be creating their own emergency response situations and practicing how to stay calm, think clearly, and act responsibly. In a high-pressure environment like Trigonometry and AP Calculus, these resources provide students with meaningful ways to reset while still developing critical thinking skills. The logic games, puzzles, and building materials encourage problem-solving in a low-stakes setting, which translates into greater confidence when approaching complex math concepts.\r\n\r\nThe Apple TV has allowed me to present lessons more dynamically, share student work instantly, and make abstract ideas more visual and accessible. Students have been especially excited about the variety of hands-on tools. A handful have explored the music equipment, experimenting with creating loops and simple songs, while others have enjoyed collaborative and nostalgic experiences—like modifying the rules of Pop the Pig to create their own versions of play.\r\n\r\nI've also seen students engage in ways that support focus and well-being. One student regularly uses the magnetic balls to quietly organize colors as a way to stay calm and on task. Others are drawn to puzzle-based challenges like the Cluebox or Rubik's Cube, working through solutions and sharing strategies. These moments have helped students open up, collaborate more naturally, and feel more comfortable engaging both socially and academically.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has helped balance rigor with accessibility—giving students the tools to think, create, collaborate, and recharge so they can return to challenging content with greater focus and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1771648403361,"projectUrl":"project/positive-rewards-and-essential-classroom/10107333/","projectTitle":"Positive Rewards and Essential Classroom Items","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Hwang","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7941480"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50932","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1433,"numTeachers":96,"percentFrplEligible":49,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":41,"percentMultiracialImputed":25,"gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.3,"schoolId":50932,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kahuku High & Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kahuku High & Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/windward-school-district/kahuku-junior-senior-high-school/50932"}
