Stepping beyond four concrete walls and into the four cardinal directions, our students grounded their minds and bodies in the sacred sands of Koʻolauloa, learning to read the landscape as a living ancestor.\r\n\r\nThe day began at first light with the resounding call of the kanipū. In reverence, our haumāna offered oli to honor the ancestral names of this place: Pūʻehuʻehu, Hamana, and Hukilau. Through these opening protocols, students practiced deep ʻāina literacy, recognizing that every ridge, stream, and ocean current carries a story worthy of stewardship.\r\n\r\nNothing was more inspiring than witnessing our youth engage in STEM sciences and Hawaiian cultural practices side by side:\r\n\r\nCoastal & Marine Literacy: Casting traditional nets, preparing fish, and tying nautical knots to understand marine ecosystems.\r\n\r\nBotanical & Physical Science: Stripping and stamping kapa, pounding poi, and processing coconut to study material properties and sustainable food systems.\r\n\r\nBeyond academic standards, the true magic was relational. Our haumāna were embraced as ʻohana, sitting attentively at the feet of community cultural practitioners as ancestral wisdom was spoken directly into their naʻau. The conductivity probes have allowed students to investigate different solutions and collect real data while learning about electricity and conductivity. These experiences have made abstract concepts more concrete, engaging, and memorable for my ninth-grade students.\r\n\r\nThe materials have also encouraged students to become more active participants in their own learning. Students work collaboratively to make observations, test ideas, analyze evidence, and communicate their findings. This project spans three units of instruction over the school year. In November, students design a fractal design on graph paper. This is in the fractal geometry unit. The fractal design is transferred onto the shrinky dink paper and then shrunk in the oven. These designs are used to decorate our classroom for the holidays.\r\n\r\nIn January when we are back in school, we use the original graph paper and the shrunk ornament to take measurements and calculate the scale factor that dilated the shape.\r\n\r\nFinally, we refer back to this project in March when we are studying similar figures. Because of your generosity, lessons in the Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug unit have been enhanced with life-like experiences which is the best way to teach and learn.\r\n\r\nStudents were divided into different groups to experience how their visual impairment can be affected by just a little bit of alcohol in their systems. The first group had to \"walk the line.\" Students were shocked at how difficult it was to walk straight. The second group worked in partners where one had goggles on and the other didn't, those with goggles on were unable to accurately throw and catch a tennis ball. The final two groups played games, chess & jenga, they found it difficult to control the fine motor skills needed to move game pieces. \r\n\r\nOverall, all students agreed that they want to stay drug & alcohol free. Most were very surprised at the difficulty they had at such simple tasks.
