We created hands-on investigation stations with a microwave, sliced bread, a toaster, and our classroom water heater to help students observe conduction, convection, and radiation in action. By measuring temperature changes and tracking energy inputs, students were able to see science come alive through real-world devices.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were excited and curious. Many were surprised that simple items like a toaster or microwave could help them understand major concepts such as radiant heat, thermal energy, and efficiency. Their favorite moment was discovering how sliced bread changes color and texture due to radiation inside the toaster. This connection helped them realize that physical science isn't just in textbooks, it's happening around them every day.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve applying what they learned to a mini-project on energy efficiency and household appliance safety. Students will compare how the microwave and water heater convert electrical energy into thermal energy and evaluate which method is more efficient for different tasks. The digital mixers that are utilized in the school have iPad applications and the larger screen makes it much easier to manipulate the application especially when we are trying to fine tune adjustments. The screen on the mixer is 6 inches, older iPads are 10 inches and this new screen is 13 inches the size difference is significant and very helpful.\r\n\r\nWe have not gotten into the period of the year when we are making movies and adding audio dialogue, music and sound effects but this iPad will also be used to film content that can be used for this.
