We are in a title one school where 85% of the population is of Hispanic descent. We are committed to motivate students to learn and express their ideas thru music and dance. Students need encouraging and support to grow as members of the community. Dance is the most common way communities come together. At our school, we have found Folklorico to be a key to success. During folklorico practice I can see how motivated children become when they learn about their culture thru music and dance. This group’s focus is on learning dance steps that tell a story about their culture. The students have the opportunity to learn the story behind a dance. Every time the students come to practice, they show their excitement and dedication in their efforts to learn more. In a short time, their dedication has paid off. Now students are ready to perform. The students are learning different songs and dances each month, and have the ability to learn the steps with rhythm by being dedicated showing peer support and leadership skills.
