We are already using the new resources almost daily in our classroom. The two large, rolling whiteboards that flip over have been especially impactful. They allow us to divide the class into smaller working groups so each staff member can target different areas of difficulty, making instruction more focused and supportive.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they thought they were \"cool,\" especially the flipping whiteboards. Having two mobile boards has noticeably reduced the pressure students feel about being watched by peers, helping them feel more comfortable coming up, taking risks, and working through problems without fear of being wrong.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve using the modeling clay to physically represent fractions. Students will break a fixed quantity of clay into proportional parts—like pizzas, pies, or cakes—while keeping track of the total mass. This hands-on modeling helps them understand how numerators and denominators function in expressions such as x/3 + 1 = 2. For our first use of the graphic novels, students worked in pairs to read and interpret these classic stories and then retell it in their own words. Because these are 9th grade students with a 2nd-4th grade reading level, the pictures helped them understand the plot, characters, and big events, and they were able to share ideas with the class more confidently than ever. Seeing them so engaged and proud of their work has been amazing!\r\n\r\nAt first, many students were reluctant to read, expressing it looks difficult and hard to get into, but as soon as they started exploring the graphic novels, their engagement grew—they were turning pages, pointing out funny or interesting parts, and getting more and more drawn into the story! For students who often feel nervous about reading, the graphic novels helped them feel confident and proud of themselves.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use the graphic novels to compare the stories to short excerpts from the original texts, look for big ideas and themes, and practice supporting their answers with evidence from both the pictures and the words. We are so grateful to our donors for making this possible—thanks to you, our students are reading, thinking, and growing in ways that once felt out of reach. Right now I am getting the hang of the software for creating. As you can see in the pictures, I have mastered simple cuts and using vinyl for a number of organizing and labeling projects.\r\n\r\nTwo huge projects that I've already tackled is labelling the locations of supplies that students need so they can access them for themselves and labeling the table groups so students always know which group they are in and where to go when being regrouped. I also included four symbols to use for assigning jobs during labs and to choose someone to share out from each group. Just these few things have already made a major impact on my classroom. Students are asking me far less where to find things, what table they are, or which group member they are. In fact, using permanent vinyl for these labels has (so far) eliminated students picking off or pulling up the stickers I was using for groups originally.\r\n\r\nAs I get more savvy with this technology, I will soon be able to have students design and create their own manipulatives, images, etc. for our many arts-integrated lessons.","fullyFundedDate":1756311454304,"projectUrl":"project/crafting-materials-for-a-creative-classr/9303683/","projectTitle":"Crafting Materials for a Creative Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kravitz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1027259_orig.jpg?crop=1816,1816,x609,y315&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565712329892","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mskravitz"},{"teacherId":8664361,"projectId":9388029,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity!
