My yearlong theme for my 12th grade English class is the social isolation, marginalization and oppression, and how these things breed inner conflict and suffering. I want to start the year by teaching this amazing collection of short stories by James Baldwin, which deal with the inexorable challenges of race in America in a profound way. The recent documentary 'I am not your Negro' has revived the extremely important voice of James Baldwin for the masses. His work is tremendously relevant and important today. This text, Going to Meet the Man: Stories, will provide a great introduction to my English 4 course, and will have great ties to other texts we are reading in the course this year, such as 'Invisible Man,' 'Dubliners,' 'Things Fall Apart,' and more.
