My students come from many different backgrounds and have different levels of English proficiency. Some are beginning to learn English, while others are developing the language skills they need to understand more complex academic material. Because they are still developing their English, my students already have an additional challenge when it comes to concentrating, participating, reading, writing, and completing assignments. Having access to snacks has helped remove one more barrier to their learning.\r\n\r\nBefore receiving these snacks, I frequently had students come into class tired, distracted, or simply unable to concentrate because they were hungry. For some students, the snack provided in my classroom was not just a treat; it was something they genuinely needed to help them get through the school day. When students are thinking about being hungry, it becomes much harder for them to focus on vocabulary, follow directions, participate in discussions, or complete an assignment.\r\n\r\nHaving snacks available has allowed me to respond to that need in a simple and supportive way. Students can receive a snack and then return their attention to the lesson. I have seen students become more settled and willing to participate after having something to eat. A snack may seem like a small resource, but in the classroom it can make a significant difference.\r\n\r\nThe snacks have also helped create a stronger sense of community in my classroom. My students know that their classroom is a place where they are welcomed, supported, and cared for. Providing snacks gives me another opportunity to show my students that their well-being matters. This is especially meaningful for students who are adjusting to a new school, a new language, or a new educational environment.\r\n\r\nAnother important impact has been increased classroom engagement. When students are comfortable and have their basic needs addressed, they are better prepared to participate in learning activities. They are more likely to work with classmates, ask questions, practice their English, and remain engaged with assignments. For English Language Learners, these opportunities to communicate and practice language are extremely important.","fullyFundedDate":1791207397031,"projectUrl":"project/snacks-and-supplies/10644347/","projectTitle":"Snacks and Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taleno","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5745736_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754406219144","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ataleno"},{"teacherId":10524653,"projectId":10322398,"letterContent":"Thank you so much to the Bezos Family Foundation and all of the generous donors who helped make this project possible! Your support provided my students with something every classroom depends on but can never have enough of—ink, paper, and essential classroom supplies.\r\n\r\nBecause of these materials, I was able to provide my students with printed readings (from the new printer you donated), assignments, graphic organizers, review materials, writing activities, and other resources that allowed them to practice important skills without worrying about whether we had enough supplies available. Having reliable access to ink and paper meant that I could focus more on instruction, differentiation, and meaningful learning experiences instead of limiting activities because of printing and supply shortages.\r\n\r\nMy students love being more active and independent learners. They are able to annotate texts, complete written responses, participate in collaborative activities, review skills, and keep materials they could refer back to throughout the year. For many of my students, having a physical copy of a text or activity makes a tremendous difference in their ability to engage by annotation, organize their thinking, and demonstrate what they have learned. Sometimes, I provide color copies of recommendation letters and resumes for my seniors as they get ready for job interviews and college admissions. \r\n\r\nSo, thank you again to every donor who invested in my students and my classroom. While many of you may use technology at home for communication or entertainment, in our classroom it has become a powerful learning tool. Students are now able to explore scientific concepts through interactive simulations, real-time research, and digital experiments that bring abstract ideas to life. Instead of simply reading about electricity, ecosystems, or force and motion, they can model, test, and revise their thinking instantly. This kind of active engagement helps deepen understanding and builds critical thinking skills that traditional worksheets simply cannot match.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students has been the ability to experiment and see immediate results. Students who were once hesitant to participate are now eager to volunteer, share discoveries, and even stay in during free time to continue exploring. The sense of ownership they feel over their learning is incredible to witness.\r\n\r\nOne of the most heartwarming changes has been seeing some of my quieter students truly shine. A few who struggled with confidence in traditional lessons have become leaders when using this new technology, guiding peers through troubleshooting and proudly explaining their findings.
