My students are often regarded as irredeemable and at risk for dropping out of school. They are seen as rough around the edges and at times can test even the most patient person. But my students are also the most real individuals I have ever met. My students have cried with me, had deep conversations regarding their futures with me, laughed with me (and at times at me). They know the full value of trust in an environment when trust is scarce, even among teachers. I've had students, at the age of 15, that have had multiple abortions, have lost multiple relatives and friends to gang activity and tragedies, and work at the same time to help their families move forward. Yet they are expected to function at their best at school? My students are not naive and will call anyone out for not fulfilling their promises. They are used to attending public schools where their teachers leave midway in a year. They constantly ask me if I will be here next year. My students bring joy to my life.
