We're going to look at how an author takes a massive global issue and turns it into a gripping story. It's about teaching my students that \"research\" doesn't have to be dry—it can be a passionate call to action.\r\n\r\nAfter the silence of standardized testing, I want my classroom to be loud again. With the supplies provided by your generosity, my students were able to create historical projects that coincided with their culture as well as current times.\r\n\r\nThe students were really pleased to see the binders, markers and glue sticks because they understood they could be creative and expressive. With the binders, students were able to journal their thoughts on impacts of historical events on their current lives. I do feel this has helped because many times, it is difficult to teach history and discuss the past and creating relevance for present times. I told them to focus on their own life experiences and trace how they were impacted by the historical occurrences of the past.\r\n\r\nWe utilized poster boards to create theme-oriented invitations to special events as well as describing contributions of historical figures. I have a diverse group of students, and yet we have continued debates about inclusion and significance of the make-up of the American culture. Several students who are usually hesitant to participate raised their hands because they finally had the tools they needed—and the confidence to use them.\r\n\r\nAnd yes—the candy, stickers, and snacks have become a huge hit! Students light up when they earn a small reward for participating or staying on task. Some stop by at the end of the day just to grab a snack before heading home, which has become a small but meaningful routine that helps them feel supported and welcomed.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students couldn't believe everything was for them. They flipped through the notebooks, passed around the supplies, and one student said, \"We've never had a notebook like this before!\" Their excitement made it clear that these resources aren't just tools—they're motivators and symbols of care.\r\n\r\nAs for next steps: students will continue building their interactive notebooks as we move into more complex reading and writing lessons. They'll expand vocabulary sections, add new graphic organizers, and use the materials to prepare for upcoming assessments. These notebooks will follow them throughout the year, growing with them as they master new skills.\r\n\r\nThank you for making such a real, daily difference in our classroom. Many of the books also spark creative thinking and seasonal curiosity, which keeps students highly motivated to read.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active, joyful experience. Students participate in whole-group read-alouds, small-group guided reading, partner reading, and independent reading time. The Halloween books quickly became a favorite choice during our reading block. Some of my reluctant readers are choosing the Halloween stories again and again because the themes are fun and approachable, which has helped build their confidence.
