These books will be a way for students to step away from their screens and fully engage in a cross-curricular reading experience. The 9th grade AP Human Geography teachers and 9th grade pre-AP ELA teachers will work together to construct a unit that examines the novel through multiple lenses and activities that connect to both classes. This is why I am asking for so many books! Research shows that immersive activities lead to more critical thinking = more inquiry, and a more developed understanding of concepts through contextualization. The book will allow students to more deeply and fully explore: colonialism, race, economic development, culture, gender norms, and construction of memoirs, providing them the opportunity to make concrete and thoughtful connections, using tragic and humorous text.
