We dropped a piece of chicken liver in water (it sank) and then a piece of the shark liver (it floated!). It was such a simple, powerful way to show the class how sharks use oil for buoyancy.\r\n\r\nMy students were also amazed to discover how large the liver actually is—taking up most of the body cavity! It was incredible to see students who are usually hesitant about science dive right in to explore.\r\n\r\nThank you for providing the resources for this high-level learning experience. When I first told the class we would be dissecting rattlesnakes, the room was instantly buzzing. To put it simply: this lab was the highlight of our year!\r\nThe \"cool factor\" was off the charts, but the learning was even better. Watching students move from hesitation to pure scientific curiosity was amazing. We spent the class examining the unique adaptations that make these predators so successful. The students were particularly blown away by the Jacobson's organ—seeing exactly where the snake places its tongue to \"smell\" the air—and the mechanics of the hinged fangs.\r\nWe even got to dispel some myths by examining the tail sections to see that the rattles are actually hollow shells of keratin, rather than filled with beads. It was a fascinating look at how nature packs so many specialized organs into such a unique body shape.\r\nThank you for helping us bring science to life. This book gives them a lot more to write about than the other ones I was using. It really is something they connect to in their lives. For my new students, they have been reading out loud with me to practice pronunciation. Their tutors who are also students have loved working with them in this book because it's something they enjoy reading while helping refugees and other immigrant students learn the language. \r\n\r\nI have a girl from Chad, Africa whose language isn't written. She had never read before in her life. I've been teaching her to read for three years now starting with the very basics. Now, she comes after school to read with me on Tuesdays. This is a book she took home and has already read half-way through. She loves the book. Her comment was \"He is a very good teacher, just like you are a very good teacher.\" This warmed my heart. She is now reading on the 9th grade level as an 11th grader. I actually forgot to take a picture of the squishies before starting to sell them, and the picture included in the thank-you package is all that remains after a few weeks of stores! I was also able to use a few items in an end-of-quarter raffle we hold with my students' unused hall pass slips (to further reinforce their good habits and choices at school).\r\n\r\nOur \"performance reviews\" each Friday are teaching the students real-world lessons about accountability in the workplace, goal-setting, and problem-solving. They've been a great way to organically help the students stay more on top of their grades and class work--and letting students buy items at our bi-weekly store is the icing on the cake! (We've also had some chances to learn a little bit about economics through the store--if a particularly popular item is in danger of selling out, the price increases to reflect the supply and demand!) Students look forward to the store and will ask me about it often.
