They walk into our classroom each morning ready to explore, ask questions, and discover something new. What I love most about them is their joy for learning and the way they celebrate each other's successes. Your donation helps nurture those qualities and gives them the resources they need to thrive.\r\n\r\nThe books you helped provide—Dancing Through Space, The Electric Slide and Kai, Please Don't Step on Me, and Bear and Wolf—bring diverse voices and beautiful perspectives into our classroom library. The magnetic tiles have completely transformed our classroom, and we are putting them to incredible use in our STEM class. They are truly invaluable for fostering the hands-on, inquiry-based learning that our students thrive on. They are used frequently when students are engaging with concepts of engineering and geometry. For example, one memorable moment happened when two groups of students spontaneously turned their building session into a competition to see who could build the tallest, freestanding tower that could also withstand a gentle \"wind test\" (a little puff of air!). This required them to constantly communicate, iterate, and apply principles of stability and force in a very practical, tangible way.\r\n\r\nThe initial reaction from the students when they first saw the boxes of colorful, geometric tiles was sheer excitement and awe! There were audible gasps and a rush of chatter about what they were going to build first. The open-ended nature of the tiles has immediately encouraged creative problem-solving and collaboration. We will be using the tiles in the next few weeks as students attempt to design structures that mimic the strength and efficiency of various structures. This will challenge them to apply what they've learned about structural engineering to a new, inspired set of design problems. Your contribution has truly laid the foundation for more exciting discoveries, and we are so grateful for your support!","fullyFundedDate":1757733542523,"projectUrl":"project/magnetic-tiles-the-gateway-to-stem/9656536/","projectTitle":"Magnetic Tiles: The Gateway to STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bjerke","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp124814_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x13,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1572372260332","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/bjerke"},{"teacherId":151155,"projectId":9615850,"letterContent":"I was amazed how quickly this was funded. In years past, I have had students who seemed not to care about working towards school incentives. This year I wanted to try something different. It seems to be working! For example, one little student likes to race through the hallway. I decided to reward them if they walked back to their classroom at a normal speed. Success!\r\n\r\n The other materials I received were a electricity kit system. The student faced some problems with it, but this was great. They started listing solutions to those problems. The first time they saw the Lakeshore Letter Crayons, one student shouted, \"I can make words all by myself!\" Another held up a stack of Counting Bears and said, \"Look! I can count so high!\" The magnetic ten frames and the Create-A-Burger Sequencing Stacker immediately caught their attention, and they couldn't wait to explore. Their faces lit up, and they were eager to dive in and start learning in a hands-on way.\r\n\r\nEvery day, my students use these materials to practice reading, math, and sequencing skills. One group built words with the Letter Crayons, cheering when they spelled each word correctly. Another group worked together with the Counting Bears and Magnetic Ten Frames, moving counters to solve addition problems and comparing answers with classmates. The Create-A-Burger Sequencing Stacker has become a favorite for building critical thinking and sequencing skills—they love \"making the burger the right way\" and explaining their steps to their friends. These activities give students the confidence to try, make mistakes, and try again, all while learning core skills.\r\n\r\nThe materials have also made a huge difference in my teaching. Because students are engaged with the manipulatives, I can spend more time supporting small groups and giving individualized instruction. I can see each child's strengths and challenges, and they are learning to support each other too. One student, who usually hesitates to participate, now raises their hand eagerly because the games make learning fun and accessible.\r\n\r\nNext, we are excited to use these tools for more advanced lessons. Students will continue exploring addition and subtraction, sequencing, and building more complex words. One memorable moment was when a group of students worked together to assemble a dinosaur with the BAODLON set. They passed the electric drill carefully, tested pieces, and celebrated when their dinosaur stood upright. Another student built a 100-piece magnetic tower, experimenting with balance and symmetry, testing different configurations, and learning from trial and error. These hands-on tools have made it easier for me to guide each student, differentiate instruction, and encourage teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.\r\n\r\nNext, we plan to integrate the STEM materials into upcoming lessons in science and math. Students will design their own building challenges, experiment with structures, and explore real-world concepts like balance, stability, and engineering.
