I would like to build a school kitchen which will be used to cook healthy recipes using produce from the garden and other items purchased to create complete nutritional meals. Currently the students are learning about fractions. They are learning to add and subtraction fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, and dividing fractions. We have completed hands-on tasks in addition to the curriculum used by the district. However, I want to take it to the next level. My goal is to teach my students by relating mathematics concepts to the real world, their world. What better way to do this than have the students learn how to cook, shop, and pay for the items needed for a recipe? My goal is to have the students prepare a Winter Feast for the entire grade level. Each of the three rotations will have one part of the meal they are focused on (main course, drink/dessert, an appetizer). They will have to plan for all the students in the grade level figuring out a tentative menu, what supplies they would need and quantity. Next, the students would need to look at ads to estimate the sum of money needed for all the items, total the amount needed, and how much change they would receive back. A few days before the scheduled feast, the students will cook and prepare the meal for their peers. The Essential Standards that I am focused on teaching this year are Fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions), Estimating, and Number Calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) in the real world. In the spring my hope is for the students to create their own cooking show!
