This year has been amazing! I probably owe that to J. K. Rowling and some amazing kids. Last year I read them the first book in the Harry Potter series. I ended up moving from fourth grade to fifth with them. It was a natural decision to keep reading the series. Soon, the kids asked if they could break into houses (groups). I agreed. Then they elected prefect to be in charge of the houses. If they had any problems they would get together and discuss solutions with their prefects. Then the prefects would get together to present the final solution to me. The house can earn points with the leading house getting a monthly fun activity. We play quidditch for Fun Fridays. My students are now recognized as being the best behaved fifth grade class in the school. I have watched them become self assured and develop their strengths as leader and community builders. I am as proud of them Next year, I want to emerge my students even further into the magic by transforming my class into a satellite of Hogwarts classroom. By doing this, I hope to not only create a love of literature and learning but empower students to reach their full potential.
