The snacks and materials you provided have already made a meaningful impact on our students' daily experience. The supplies are being used both in the classroom and during lunch/after school activities, helping us create a more engaging and supportive environment. Students are using the materials for many of their day to day use. They have been using the markers for a lot of their art work. The snacks have been especially valuable in keeping them energized and focused throughout long school days and practices. The kids love the cheez its as shown in one of the pictures I uploaded. \r\n\r\n When the students first saw the new materials and snacks, their excitement was immediate. Many of them were eager to dive right in. Asking questions, exploring the new supplies and eating the new snacks were some of the immediate things they did. Growing a collection of books that students want to talk about just warms my heart. Almost immediately, students noticed the new literary additions to the room and were borrowing them for our reading Wednesdays. A few students even wanted to stick with a new book for their new round of Book Talk presentations. Some Book Talk posters are in the pictures provided. I now keep a check-out list of books for my classroom so students can take them home. Of the new batch that you generously provided, Six of Crows, Nightmare Before Christmas, Spaceboy, and Go Ask Alice have been checked out of my room's growing library. \r\n\r\nWe've also put the white boards and prizes to good use. We played a few review games to ensure the students are understanding each act of the play Macbeth. Every group, which are named after Macbeth characters, try to answer each question by writing their answers on the white board. Every group that gets the answer correct, earns a point. The group with the most points at the end wins a prize. Students become fully engaged when duckies or stickers are on the line. Three out of my six classes ended with a tie. I've never seen engagement higher.\r\n\r\nThe tiny ducks and anime stickers have been insanely popular with the students. On a couple occasions, I recognized a fellow teacher who was having a rough day. It's amazing what a little duck and note can do for moral. When a teacher's mood improves, the better they are to handle their classrooms.Teaching a co-taught level of English, I have several students on the spectrum. When they are having a difficult day, letting them pick a sticker has been a huge help in preventing meltdowns. I also used a duck and sticker as a motivator to get a student to not be late to class. We made a deal, if she didn't end up on my 5 minute after school detention list for and entire week (placement triggered by tardies), I would give her a pink duck and a sticker. She earned it 😁 This student was on my list every day until we made this deal. Not only are these tiny rewards improving student attention and behavior in my class, but it's boosting moral and attendance in other classes as well. \r\n\r\nWe are going to have another round of Book Talks when we return from spring break. The games, candy, colored pencils, and blue tape and other supplies have done so much more than fill a supply closet; they have fundamentally shifted the energy in our hallways and created a space where every student feels welcome to join in the fun.\r\n\r\nYou should have seen the students' faces when the materials first arrived! High schoolers can sometimes be a tough crowd to impress, but the sight of brand-new games, a mountain of candy, and art supplies broke right through that \"too cool\" exterior. \r\n\r\nThe absolute highlight so far has been \"The Floor is Lava.\" We used that blue tape to transform the hallway into a massive obstacle course. It was a sight to behold, seeing kids who are usually glued to their phones leaping over \"lava pits\" and navigating the paths we taped out. It turned a normal Friday into something the kids are still laughing about. That tape might seem like a small thing, but it gave them a reason to be active and silly together and put smiles on everyone's faces!\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next step is to keep this momentum moving. We are currently brainstorming new ways to ensure that \"Fun Fridays\" never feel repetitive. Our ongoing goal is to find fresh, exciting ways to make students genuinely excited to be at school. The books added to our independent reading options, introducing students to a wide range of skills and lessons, including building stamina, expanding vocabulary through context, analyzing character development, identifying themes, and making connections between texts and real life. Because the collection includes varied genres, cultures, and reading levels, students are able to practice choice-driven reading while still engaging in meaningful literacy skills like inference, reflection, and critical thinking. Many of the novels also open the door for discussions around empathy, identity, resilience, and perspective—skills that matter far beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active, visible, and student-centered. Students read independently, often with a snack in hand, which helps create a relaxed and welcoming environment. Reading time is treated as valuable and protected, not rushed or used as filler. Students track their thinking through annotations, journals, or brief conferences, and they are encouraged to talk about books with peers. Snacks play a key role in this process by removing barriers—when students' basic needs are met, they are better able to focus, engage, and enjoy reading.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially energized by the new books. Reluctant readers are more willing to try when they see books that reflect their interests or experiences, while avid readers are excited by fresh titles and new authors. I've seen students recommend books to one another, read more consistently, and take pride in finishing novels—clear signs that these resources are fostering a stronger, more joyful reading culture in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1768278120647,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-the-brain-and-the-body/10010552/","projectTitle":"Fueling the Brain and the Body","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Matherly","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2778302_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1504387906753","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2778302"},{"teacherId":2778302,"projectId":9898024,"letterContent":"Helping me pay for my National Board Maintenance of Certification has an made a huge impact on my students daily as I continue to access and evaluate my teacher strategies and the ways in which I tailor my lessons to meet my students needs.
