As my students are coming from almost a year and a half of distance learning and we learn to adjust to the challenges of teaching during a pandemic, I am looking to refresh my curriculum. We need to instill hope, resilience, and kindness into the new generation of students. As an English teacher, I have become very aware of the lack of diversity among the authors we teach and am looking to rectify this issue by securing books from more people of color about more relevant issues. Students learn through reading so I want to expand my library to include more engaging books that can keep kids turning pages instead of the ever-present screen-time trap. My last goal of updating my classroom library is getting more books that address mental health. Too many students are struggling in silence and can often find hope when reading about characters similar to themselves.
