Thanks to your donation, we were able to purchase some calculators and DC motor parts. \r\n\r\nThe calculators are really important because in engineering and in physics (which I also teach), calculators are heavily needed. Unfortunately, the TI30xiis', while being great calculators, become unusable over time. This is because over the course of a few years, the text on the buttons rubs off and you can no longer tell what the button says.\r\n\r\nThe DC motors and fan parts are for a \"build your own fan\" lab that I do with my students. This project covered several packs of jumper wires which my students use in various labs throughout the year. In the first lab of the year, students use jumper wires in order to build circuits on breadboards to see the different properties between series and parallel circuits. \r\n\r\nThen, later in the year, students use the jumper wires to connect different components together in projects like their \"Police Siren\" project, \"Build your own fan\" project, \"Build your own LED display\" project, and a \"build your own portable phone charger\" project. With your help, I was able to buy several spools of electrical tape. My students use electrical tape to cover solder joints and hold wires together (without transferring electricity).\r\n\r\nMy students use electrical tape for several different projects that we do, as you will see in the photos. The current project they are working on is the LED display project. In this project, students have to take an object and light it up in some type of manner. The electrical tape comes in very handy because it prevents shorts from happening between the wire and other metal contacts. It also makes for neatly hiding wires.\r\n\r\nElectrical tape is very important in my class and I could not do a lot of things without it. I truly believe that hands-on education is the best way to teach engineering, however, this method is very expensive to implement, especially, with the large class size I have in engineering this year (which is awesome to see so many kids interested in STEM but difficult because I need so many more supplies).\r\n\r\nThis project covered PVC pipes and connectors. The 1/2\" PVC connectors are the perfect size to house the DC motors we use in several projects. With these connectors, we are able to center and hold our DC motors in place (as you could see from some of the photos).\r\n\r\nThank you so much for making this all possible. I truly believe that hands-on education is the best way to teach engineering, however, it is very expensive to do. One of the biggest costs I run into every year is the cost of batteries. This project helped purchase several battery types that I need for my various projects. With the variety of batteries that this project covered, my students are able to pick between various voltage sources. For instance, they could use AAA battery packs to make their voltage source smaller to fit into to different containers. These batteries are also useful for their console project (shown in the pictures) which requires four AA batteries! I write an exclamation point there because 4 times the amount of students I teach, is a LOT of batteries.\r\n\r\nThank you for making hands-on education possible. Without the support of donors like you, I would not be able to deliver as many labs/projects as I have.
