This donorschoose project covered a wide variety of random things we needed for class.\r\n\r\nThe DC motors were used for a \"Build your own fan\" project - which the students always really enjoy. It is one of the first labs we do and shows kids how a series circuit works.\r\n\r\nDry Erase Markers are crucial for our \"checks for understanding\" dry-erase paddle boards. These are used to ask students quick questions and provide quick feedback as to where they are.\r\n\r\nCalculators are always a huge necessity. Every year, a few break down (the calculators I have are from 2015); so getting a few replacements each year is always helpful.\r\n\r\nTape is needed to hang up papers, projects, and hold things together in our engineering class.\r\n\r\nAll these items are very helpful in allowing my students to engage in hands-on learning. In my engineering class, we use AA, AAA, and 9V batteries very frequently for a variety of projects. In these projects, often, students get to choose what type of voltage source they want (how many batteries are needed and of what type of battery they want to use). This allows for them to analyze their voltage source, the type of casing needed for the batteries, and design around this. \r\n\r\nWhile we use batteries for every project we build, the project with the most need for batteries is the Tetris Console. This requires 4 AA batteries per student. Thanks to your donation, we were able to purchase some calculators and DC motor parts. \r\n\r\nThe calculators are really important because in engineering and in physics (which I also teach), calculators are heavily needed. Unfortunately, the TI30xiis', while being great calculators, become unusable over time. This is because over the course of a few years, the text on the buttons rubs off and you can no longer tell what the button says.\r\n\r\nThe DC motors and fan parts are for a \"build your own fan\" lab that I do with my students. This project covered several packs of jumper wires which my students use in various labs throughout the year. In the first lab of the year, students use jumper wires in order to build circuits on breadboards to see the different properties between series and parallel circuits. \r\n\r\nThen, later in the year, students use the jumper wires to connect different components together in projects like their \"Police Siren\" project, \"Build your own fan\" project, \"Build your own LED display\" project, and a \"build your own portable phone charger\" project. With your help, I was able to buy several spools of electrical tape. My students use electrical tape to cover solder joints and hold wires together (without transferring electricity).\r\n\r\nMy students use electrical tape for several different projects that we do, as you will see in the photos. The current project they are working on is the LED display project. In this project, students have to take an object and light it up in some type of manner. The electrical tape comes in very handy because it prevents shorts from happening between the wire and other metal contacts. It also makes for neatly hiding wires.\r\n\r\nElectrical tape is very important in my class and I could not do a lot of things without it.
