We have been using the materials during outdoor play to encourage gross motor development, movement, coordination, social interaction, and imaginative play. One of our favorite moments has been watching students work together to explore the new equipment, take turns, and create their own games. These experiences allow our students to practice important skills like balance, problem-solving, communication, and cooperation while having fun and being active.\r\n\r\nThe students were incredibly excited when they first saw the new materials! They could not wait to explore everything, and it was wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm. For many of our young learners, outdoor play is also an important opportunity for sensory regulation and building confidence with new physical challenges. Having engaging, age-appropriate equipment gives them more ways to safely move their bodies, interact with their peers, and develop independence.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue incorporating the equipment into purposeful outdoor learning experiences. We plan to create simple movement challenges, obstacle courses, cooperative games, and activities that connect outdoor play with concepts we are learning in the classroom. As our students become more comfortable with the materials, we will encourage them to take greater ownership by helping create games, practicing new skills, and working together with their classmates. One meaningful moment was during a storytime activity when a student who typically struggles to sit and attend was able to remain engaged while quietly using a sensory ring. Instead of getting up or becoming frustrated, he stayed with the group and even participated by answering a question about the story. We've also incorporated the fidgets into a simple sorting and choice activity, where students practice selecting an appropriate tool and using it responsibly, which helps build independence and self-awareness.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were very excited and curious. We took time to introduce each item, model appropriate use, and practice expectations together. While there was some initial eagerness to explore everything at once, students quickly learned that the fidgets are tools to help their bodies focus, not toys for playtime. Many of our students, especially those with autism, immediately connected with certain items and began using them to stay calm and regulated throughout the day.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to continue embedding these tools into our classroom routines while expanding their use during targeted learning activities. For example, during upcoming literacy and fine motor centers, students will use fidgets to support focus while working on tasks like tracing, matching, and early writing skills. We are also helping students build the language to express their needs, such as asking for a specific fidget when they feel overwhelmed. Our goal is to strengthen self-regulation skills so students can remain engaged, confident, and ready to learn in all classroom settings.","fullyFundedDate":1768052609303,"projectUrl":"project/fidgeting-in-pre-k/9988971/","projectTitle":"Fidgeting in Pre-K!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Sterrett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5309118_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1659386949756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5309118"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_30847","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":865,"numTeachers":50,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":20,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":3,"percentMultiracialImputed":15,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"17.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.8,"schoolId":30847,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Aldeane Comito Ries Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Aldeane Comito Ries Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/nevada/clark-county-school-district/aldeane-comito-ries-elementary-school/30847"}
