These texts have allowed us to introduce and practice important reading skills such as identifying the main idea, making predictions, understanding characters' feelings, and connecting stories to students' own experiences. With a wider variety of books available, students are also learning how to choose texts that interest them and challenge them at the right level. Students have been particularly enjoying the historical fiction graphic novels. This fits perfectly in with our unit we just started where students are learning about Japanese Americans living in prison camps during world war 2. The books have ignited a love for historical fiction and a curiosity about the world and history. \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active and engaging time. Students participate daily in independent reading. During independent reading, having students be able to choose engaging books has been really key to their engagement during this time. The new books have made this time more meaningful because students are excited and curious about the stories they are reading.\r\n\r\nThanks to these generous donations, our classroom library has become a place of discovery. Students are building confidence, strengthening their reading skills, and developing a genuine love for books.
