"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education" - Martin Luther King, Jr. The goal in my classroom is to develop my student's characters, as well as their intellectual capacities. Kids are empowered when they see themselves in the books that they read. Our room is filled with 29 students who are excited about learning. My school is located in a low-income area, 85% of my students quality for free or reduced-price lunch. The neighborhood is a mixture of cultures, first and second generation immigrants as well as students and families who have called it home for generations. Over 50% of my students are still learning English. My students are from Samoa, Somalia, Vietnam, Mexico, and many other nations. Despite the challenges they face in their daily lives, my students love to learn and have the drive to succeed.
