What started as a simple seating option quickly became a meaningful incentive that students genuinely value. By turning the chair into a rotation earned through positive behavior, leadership, and kindness, it has given students a fun and motivating way to take ownership of our classroom environment. Rather than competing over the chair, students now work toward earning it by being helpful, respectful, and supportive of one another.\r\n\r\nThe impact on classroom culture has been noticeable. Because the chair is not tied to grades, students of all ability levels have an equal opportunity to earn it, which reinforces the importance of character and community over academic competition. Students take pride in earning their turn, and it has encouraged them to model positive behavior and contribute to a welcoming, inclusive learning space. This grant has helped transform a simple chair into a powerful tool for building relationships, promoting responsibility, and fostering a positive learning environment.","fullyFundedDate":1762267530993,"projectUrl":"project/reward-chair/9794273/","projectTitle":"Reward Chair","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hutson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9188122"},{"teacherId":10196131,"projectId":9630518,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our \"Cancel the Noise\" project! It is so exciting and rewarding to see my students apply their creativity to make something new! \r\n\r\nIn my English class, these materials have also been very useful. My students often forget to bring notebook paper to class, so having extra paper has been handy. At the beginning of the year, I also used paper when I asked students to create name tags. Though this activity takes place early in the school year, it provides students with a meaningful opportunity to express themselves creatively—both visually and through writing.\r\n\r\nEach student begins with the same instructions for their mask, yet no two results are ever alike. The outside of the mask represents how they present themselves to the world—or how they believe the world sees them. The inside reveals something deeper: personal interests, goals for the future, or even the challenges they face.\r\n\r\nAfter completing their masks, students write reflective essays explaining the choices they made in their designs, inside and out. These essays often reveal thoughtful and honest insights into how students view themselves and their place in the world.\r\n\r\nThis project is a highlight of the year for me. It not only allows students to explore identity and self-expression, but also lays the foundation for our upcoming study of Oedipus the King by Sophocles, believed to have been originally performed in 429 BC. As we read the play, we examine how ancient Greek actors used masks to portray multiple roles, and how these physical masks parallel the figurative ones worn by characters in the story.\r\n\r\nIn our discussions, we explore the idea of appearance versus reality—how characters present themselves outwardly, and how that may differ from who they truly are, whether by choice or by lack of self-awareness. The connections students make between their own masks and the themes in the play are consistently powerful.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this project possible.
