This is in addition to the content itself. To facilitate the reading aspects, it is advantageous to have a class library of important and interesting novels. These are historical novels that students can sink their teeth into, enjoy, learn some history, and make historical connections across curricula and content. Additionally, by reading these pieces of literature, the exposure to good writing and new vocabulary will expose students and help students write better. These are not only valuable skills for an AP class but skills they will use for life. It helps strengthen writing, reading and critical thinking. The novels selected are books students have read before that I consistently get positive feedback about. Both books allow students to draw an easy understanding between different forms of government and what it might look like if you lived in an unfortunate society where your personal liberties are restricted. Then we made the connections as to how in the Gilded Age, there were very few rules placed on businesses and monopolies. We played it in teams with a focus on property and again on railroads. This helped them make better connections to the railroad barons back in the day. \r\n\r\nWe had 2 very used monopoly games that together made a complete board game that we used at times but could not use with an entire class. We used the new digital thermometers to track temperature changes inside the solar ovens during the design phase, so my students could determine each oven's efficiency. The probe thermometers are sturdy and provide a clear reading, which is much better than the old analog ones. The infrared \"gun\" thermometers helped everyone figure out how much heat was escaping through the sides, and whether to add insulation or change their materials.
