Just Mercy (Adapted for Young Adults): A True Story of the Fight for Justice is a nonfiction memoir for adolescent readers in which Bryan Stevenson gives an empowering firsthand account of his time as a lawyer and advocate for vulnerable people who have been wrongfully imprisoned. Stories like these are important for young readers because they illustrate the power of using one's voice to create positive change. Not only will students read about individuals who advocate for others and do good in their communities, they will also learn some strategies for being effective readers of informative, nonfiction texts. It is important to equip students with these strategies to ensure that they become thoughtful, critical readers and consumers of media. Research also shows that high school students who read nonfiction texts are more likely to experience success in college-level courses, and that many adolescent readers actually prefer nonfiction books.
