These copies of A Long Way Gone and The Glass Castle will both be part of a book choice project for our unit on differing human experiences in "the real world". Students will have a choice of which novel to read and then will work in groups based on novel choice after the completion of the novel to complete a final project. Students will also take time to look at literary elements and elements of nonfiction that are present in both books. Books make wonderful travel agents; they can take us places and show us things we've never even dreamed of before! Some of my students have never been outside their own county before, much less traveled across the desert and lived in an abandoned house or fought as a child soldier in Sierra Leone, both of which happen in the books I've chosen. It is essential for my students to look at other aspects of life that, because of how they grew up, they may not know anything about. When we get to know and understand someone and their perspective, we can build a better, more respectful, relationship with them; a concept that won't just get them through my class but will also make them better global citizens.
