These magazines were easy to tie in to our content standards and also easy for students to relate to as many of them involved holidays or events that students were familiar with already. They helped capture students' attention with fun and colorful photographs and helped hold their attention for me to incorporate English Language standards in a hands-on, real-life way. We were able to easily pick out text features within the magazine, which is an important first grade skill. The joy and excitement that all the students had as they opened their gifts was priceless. \r\n\r\nDue to the two different arrival times of the items in the project, we were able to have two separate celebrations. Which turned out to be PERFECT! The first celebration took place the day before Christmas break. Before I gave the children their very own copy of The Polar Express, I read them the story and we watched the movie and drank hot chocolate while wearing our pajamas. Most of the children had watched the movie but very few had ever read The Polar Express. So when they realized they had their very own copy of The Polar Express that they could take home and keep forever, they lit up with excitement and appreciation. I was also able to give my student intern, from a nearby college, her own copy of The Polar Express to add to her teacher read aloud collection of books. She was overjoyed with gratitude and shared with the children that next year when she has her very own classroom she will be able to read The Polar Express to her students. \r\n\r\nThe second celebration couldn't have worked out any better! The remaining items from my project arrived at school a little while after the students returned from Christmas break. Therefore, we planned another celebration while all the children were bubbling over with excitement and anticipation as the thought of snow beginning to fall at any moment was filling their minds. Celebration day number two finally came, it was Friday, January 23rd, 2026, the children eagerly opened their gifts to find a snuggly teddy bear, a pair of fun Christmas socks, a colorful toboggan with a matching pair of warm, soft gloves. Many of the children left school that day wearing their new toboggan and gloves while carrying their teddy bear. It was a sweet and exciting moment to witness. A moment that would not have been able to happen without your support and kindness. \r\n\r\nTwo weeks later, when students finally returned to school following the snow storm, many came to class wearing their matching toboggan and gloves. They shared with me about how they had worn their toboggan and gloves while playing out in the snow and how thankful they were for them. Several parents also reached out sharing their appreciation and talked about how the timing of their gifts were PERFECT! Originally, I thought it was a mistake having two different celebrations. When in reality, it was absolutely perfect and just what so many of my students needed at just the right time! \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity. You helped create a time of bringing families together and you provided warmth for small hands and heads that would have otherwise been cold. Thank you for providing a new friendly teddy bear to snuggle with each day and night.
