Instead of simply reminding students to wash their hands, I can now give them a hands-on demonstration of how easily \"germs\" can spread and why we need to wash carefully with soap and water. The children were amazed to see what can remain on their hands when they do not wash thoroughly! This has made our daily handwashing routine much more meaningful.\r\n\r\nThe other materials are helping behind the scenes, too. The locks help keep our classroom snacks and supplies safely secured, while the power strips and laptop charger keep our technology available for songs, movement activities, stories, and instructional videos.\r\n\r\nOf course, the treasure box has been a HUGE hit! Students are excited to earn special rewards for following directions, sharing, taking turns, cleaning up, using kind words, and making safe choices. This helps me keep food protected and organized while making it easier to prepare for snack time and special classroom celebrations. The lunch tote also helps us keep snacks clean and organized when we take learning outdoors or participate in activities away from our classroom.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching students proudly wear their birthday crowns and celebrate one another. These small celebrations help children feel special, included, and like an important part of our classroom family.\r\n\r\nNext, we are continuing to build our classroom community while learning routines, practicing independence, and developing friendships. These resources have made a wonderful difference in our self-contained K–2 Autism classroom by giving my students hands-on opportunities to learn, practice skills, and work toward greater independence. The Busy Books allow students to practice important academic skills at their individual levels while exploring fun and familiar topics. Students can work on letter and number recognition, tracing, matching, identifying pictures, and learning about seasons, animals, and planets. The dot stick markers add an exciting hands-on component that helps students practice fine-motor skills, color recognition, hand-eye coordination, and following directions.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were excited to explore them. The colorful pages immediately caught their attention, and they were eager to see what was inside the Busy Books. The dot stick markers were especially exciting because students enjoy choosing different colors and using them to complete their activities. Some students immediately began looking through the pages, while others wanted to touch and explore the markers. This excitement helped create a positive learning experience. Students who sometimes have difficulty remaining engaged during traditional paper-and-pencil activities were more willing to participate when they could use the Busy Books and dot stick markers. Seeing their smiles and excitement while completing learning activities has been very rewarding.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources during small-group instruction, independent work, centers, and one-on-one activities. The materials also give me opportunities to connect instruction to my students' IEP goals. During literacy activities, students can use the letter pages to practice identifying, matching, and recognizing letters. During math, the number activities help students practice counting, number recognition, and one-to-one correspondence. The tracing pages help strengthen pre-writing skills and fine-motor development. The seasons, animals, and planets activities give us opportunities to build vocabulary, identify pictures, answer questions, and learn about science and the world around us.\r\n\r\nThe dot stick markers can be used in many different ways throughout the school day. Students can use specific colors to mark letters or numbers, place dots on objects while counting, follow color directions, complete patterns, or identify pictures. These activities can be easily adjusted to meet each student's needs and ability level. Most importantly, the materials encourage students to make choices and participate more independently. A student selecting a color, completing a page, or finishing a tracing activity may seem like a small accomplishment, but in our classroom, these moments represent meaningful growth.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using these materials to reinforce classroom lessons and individual IEP goals. I will continue encouraging students to complete activities with less adult assistance, follow directions, make choices, and communicate when they need help. Students use him to retell parts of The Kissing Hand, act out scenes, and share their own ideas about what Chester might be thinking or feeling. It has been wonderful to see students who are sometimes hesitant to speak become more comfortable communicating through puppetry and dramatic play.\r\n\r\nOur classroom has also transformed into a storytelling space, with different book characters around the room inviting students to explore, read, pretend, and create. Students naturally point out the characters they recognize, revisit familiar stories, and use the materials during center time to create their own storylines.\r\n\r\nThese resources are helping my Title I Pre-K students strengthen oral language, comprehension, sequencing, vocabulary, confidence, and social-emotional skills in ways that feel joyful and meaningful. Students with language delays, autism, and other communication needs especially benefit from having visual and hands-on supports that give them another way to express themselves.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to move from retelling stories to becoming storytellers ourselves. Students will create their own characters, develop beginning-middle-end stories, perform for their classmates, and connect stories to their own experiences. Seeing my students discover that they can be authors, actors, and storytellers has been incredibly rewarding.
