They learned about kindness and how to be a good friend and citizen. \r\n\r\nThis project helped them think about what makes them happy when they are not in school and what might make other children happy over summer vacation. They thought about the other children at our school who have Autism, like them. They spent an afternoon organizing materials from our packages and then putting 1 of each item into a drawstring back. Each bag will have a water bottle, sunscreen, bubbles, and an LCD tablet for kids to use during summer vacation. They thought about being kind and being a good citizen and friend when they packed the bags. Next week, during our last full week of school, they will deliver the Summer Bags to the other self-contained classrooms. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for making this service project possible. Because of your generosity, my students were able to explore one of the most exciting and engaging science experiences we've had this year—watching caterpillars grow and transform into butterflies right in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe butterfly habitats, caterpillar food, models, and posters you helped provide created an immersive, hands-on learning environment. My students—who are on the autism spectrum—thrive with real-world, tactile experiences, and this project gave them exactly that. They were able to observe the life cycle of a butterfly up close, take responsibility for caring for the caterpillars, and engage in meaningful conversations about growth, change, and the natural world.\r\n\r\nOut of the 12 caterpillars we received, 8 successfully made it to the butterfly stage right before our eyes! It was a magical experience that sparked excitement and curiosity in a way no textbook ever could. Students were fascinated by each stage of the process and took great pride in being part of it. They asked thoughtful questions, made daily observations, and showed incredible care and responsibility throughout.\r\n\r\nThis experience supported their individual learning styles and gave them a chance to shine in ways that traditional lessons often don't allow. As a first-year teacher, I've quickly learned how essential the right materials are for creating an engaging and supportive learning environment—especially for my sixth grade students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my classroom now has the tools we need to focus more deeply on building social skills through shared play and collaboration. The games and building materials you helped fund have been a huge hit! I've already seen students who were once hesitant to engage with peers begin to open up and participate more confidently in group activities.\r\n\r\nThe books have also brought so much joy into our classroom. It's been incredible to see my students excited to dive into stories they enjoy—laughing and talking about the characters to one another. And the snacks have made a big difference too—keeping students fueled and focused, especially during longer tasks and group sessions.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped create a more inclusive, interactive, and nurturing space where my students can grow—not just academically, but socially as well.
