Across the country, people call Rochester a dangerous city. They call our students violent, and label them as kids who don't want to learn. This is such a harmful and reductionist viewpoint. There is something to be learned from every family, every community, every child. And every child wants to learn. The students in Rochester are brilliant. They demonstrate so many types of intelligence. They show emotional intelligence when they see someone who is hurting. They show academic intelligence when they are curious about the world around them. They show linguistic intelligence, as they code switch between the various spaces they are asked to occupy. Their intelligence is a gift that they bring into our classrooms, and into our lives. As my favorite poet, Anne Carson once wrote, "Reality is a sound, you have to tune into it not just keep yelling." Put your assumptions aside, learn to listen, and then listen to learn.
