Because of your support, my students have had access to books and magazines that have sparked curiosity, laughter, meaningful discussions, and a genuine excitement for reading.\r\n\r\nThe new texts have provided opportunities for students to strengthen essential literacy skills in authentic and engaging ways. Third graders have been immersed in the hysterical antics of Mercy Watson, a toast-loving pig whose adventures include everything from midnight escapades to attempts at driving the family car. The humor, colorful characters, and fast-paced plots have made these books an instant favorite. As students laugh their way through Mercy's adventures, they are also practicing important skills such as decoding, reading fluency, predicting, retelling, and identifying story elements. Several students who are often hesitant to pick up a book have eagerly asked for the next Mercy Watson story, demonstrating growing confidence and enthusiasm for reading.\r\n\r\nSixth graders have thoroughly enjoyed reading *Growing Home*, the Barnes & Noble Children's Book of the Year, and following the journey of Toasty and Ivy, two unlikely friends who discover the meaning of belonging, courage, and family. The novel has inspired thoughtful conversations as students analyze characters, draw inferences, make predictions, and support their thinking with evidence from the text. Many students have connected personally with the themes of friendship and perseverance, and it has been rewarding to watch them eagerly discuss plot twists and character decisions. In addition, the sample Scholastic News magazines that have been sent to us helped students strengthen nonfiction reading skills while exploring current events and scientific topics that connect reading to the world around them. We are super excited to keep receiving new editions each month beginning in the fall. \r\n\r\nPerhaps the greatest impact has been seeing students view themselves as readers. Whether they are laughing at Mercy Watson's latest adventure, eagerly turning the pages of Growing Home, or sharing an interesting fact they discovered in a magazine article, they are building confidence, strengthening literacy skills, and developing a love of reading. Thank you for investing in my students and helping create meaningful learning experiences that will stay with them long after these books have been read.","fullyFundedDate":1773849590268,"projectUrl":"project/texts-that-spark-curiosity-and-confidenc/10042117/","projectTitle":"Texts that Spark Curiosity and Confidence","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Woodworth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp968806_orig.jpg?crop=271,271,x509,y480&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1768838551082","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/968806"},{"teacherId":4338482,"projectId":10045444,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your very generous donation. At first, I was going to try to try to ration the snacks stretch to June by having kids just have snacks only on Fridays. They enjoyed the snack so much that I offered them all week long. When the new materials arrived, students were immediately excited and eager to explore them. The addition of beanbags and soft rugs has transformed part of the room into a relaxing space where students can comfortably sit, read, or take a break. Many students also use these items for deep pressure input, placing them on their bodies to help regulate their sensory needs and feel more grounded throughout the day.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe visual sensory tools have further enhanced the atmosphere by creating a safe, soothing environment that promotes focus and emotional regulation. Along with these supports, access to snacks has helped ensure that students are able to meet their basic needs, allowing them to stay engaged in learning rather than being distracted by hunger. Additionally, the hands-on calming materials have been especially beneficial for students who become overstimulated, providing them with effective strategies to self-regulate and return to learning more quickly.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has not only increased student comfort but has also supported their emotional well-being and ability to learn. Students now have access to tools that help them manage their feelings, stay focused, and feel safe in their classroom environment, leading to a more positive and productive school experience.\r\nMoving forward, the focus will be on continuing to integrate these materials into daily classroom routines and teaching students how to independently use them to support their self-regulation and focus. Staff will monitor how students respond to the tools and make adjustments as needed to better meet individual needs. Additional opportunities may include expanding the variety of sensory supports and incorporating structured lessons on emotional regulation, ensuring students can generalize these skills across settings.","fullyFundedDate":1769353957535,"projectUrl":"project/a-moment-of-calm-in-a-busy-school-day/10052634/","projectTitle":"A Moment of Calm in a Busy School Day","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Alibrandi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10416174"},{"teacherId":2563577,"projectId":10042343,"letterContent":"Thank you for the incredible generous donation! your gifts made my classroom so much more welcoming and homey. I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous contributions to our classroom project. The new resources you provided have made a tremendous impact on my students' learning environment, creating a space where they feel supported, valued, and cared for.\r\nSince receiving the materials, we have already begun to incorporate them into our daily routines. One particular moment stood out to me: as my students opened the boxes filled with cozy supplies, the joy on their faces was priceless. They exclaimed with delight upon seeing the yoga mats, fidget tools, and colorful stickers. The excitement in the room was palpable as they explored each item, knowing that these resources were meant to help them feel more comfortable and ready to learn. The sight of their smiling faces filled me with hope and reaffirmed how essential it is for students to feel cared for in the classroom.\r\nOur first project utilizing these resources has been centered around emotional regulation and building a supportive classroom community. We introduced \"Calm Corner\" sessions where students can use the yoga balls and mats to practice mindfulness and stretching exercises, allowing them to re-energize during the school day. The fidgets have proven to be invaluable tools for students who need a moment to focus or recenter themselves. They have begun to take ownership of their emotional well-being, supporting one another in the process.\r\nAs we move forward, the next step involves encouraging students to express their emotions and build connections through art. We will be launching a \"Feelings Art\" project where students can create expressions of their emotions using the LEGOs, stickers, and craft supplies. This creative outlet allows them to navigate their feelings and opens up dialogue about emotional awareness in a fun and engaging way. We hope to display their work in the classroom to cultivate a sense of pride and belonging among us all.\r\nYour support has truly helped us establish an environment where students feel safe and valued, regardless of the challenges they face outside of school. One special moment was watching students who don't always work together collaborate during a cooperative game, encouraging one another and celebrating small successes. Our \"caring corner\" has quickly become a daily, meaningful part of our routine, a place where students know they can quietly get what they need and return to learning feeling comfortable and cared for. From the very first day the cart was introduced, students were drawn to it with curiosity and excitement. There were lots of wide eyes and whispered \"wow\"s as they noticed the snacks, the cozy items, and even the calming tools. It immediately sent a powerful message: this is a space where your needs matter.\r\n\r\nWe are already seeing the impact in small but powerful moments. Just this past week, a student came in wearing oversized sneakers with no socks. When we were able to offer her a fresh pair, her whole demeanor shifted, she stood a little taller, smiled a little brighter, and rejoined the class ready to learn. Before she left, she quietly asked if there might be socks for her older brother, too. Other students stop by for a quick Band-Aid, a snack to help them focus through a long morning, or mittens and hats before heading outside. These moments may seem simple, but they remove barriers that could otherwise disrupt a child's entire day. The calming tools and fidgets have also become a helpful support, allowing students to self-regulate and stay engaged during lessons.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, this caring corner will continue to be woven into our classroom community as we focus on building independence, empathy, and readiness to learn. Students are beginning to understand that taking care of themselves helps them be better learners, and they're also becoming more aware of how to support one another. We plan to incorporate conversations around kindness, needs, and community care into our lessons, using this space as a real-life example.
