When students visit the library with their teachers and are required to check books out for a grade, there's no guarantee they'll actually read the books. In contrast, students who visit the library on their own time to get books (usually during their lunch recess) are the ones who truly have a desire to read. A majority of the materials I check out during lunch recess are the new books I acquired from Donors Choose funds. I have a special display full of the new Spanish books, and students love to peruse the materials to see what's in. They rush to the circulation desk excited to take home the new items.\r\n\r\nBy purchasing materials in other languages, I believe that our Spanish-speaking students feel valued. They notice I'm expanding our middle school library collection for their benefit - because they matter.
