Students will be able to simply focus on calming their emotions and letting go of negative energy caused by traumatic events that can become barriers to accessing their learning. A calming room will provide students with a safe place to enter in order to regain focus and set intentions for their day. With the calming room available to all students, they will know there is always a place they can go to get refocused and ready to go back to their learning environment. A safe and relaxing environment includes feelings of warmth and welcome by items such as area rugs and comfort seating. These items can increase productivity, excitement and self-esteem through motivational feelings and experiences. With the use of aromatherapy and sound projections, we are able to calm the nervous system and help practice coping strategies such a breathing and mediation to help decrease feelings of anxiety and stress. In addition, the altering of the lighting in the room can decrease depression symptoms and increase positive ideations. When students feel safe at school, they are inspired and motivated to learn.
