The majority of my students come from a low socio-economic background (70% free and reduced lunch) and have experienced some kind of trauma in their lives (70% as reported by one of the school counselors). They are at a low educational level and have a wide range of abilities, with most of them having some cognitive challenges. We focus on reading (most are at 1st grade or lower), counting coins and bills, telling time, and real life skills such as cooking, laundry, and we do recycling for the school once a week. The students have told me that they never go anywhere, and all but one has spent their entire school lives have been in the Reno area. One student told me he has never seen an animal except a dog or a cat. If I can't give them a life experience then they might not get it at all.
