One of the most difficult units in AP Human Geography is Cities and Urban Land-use and the Legos allowed students to build their own urban models, compare their to existing urban models, and learn about the difficulties creating a sustainable city. My students are using the cooking tools, mixing bowls, knives, and serving supplies during our life skills lessons to practice real-world skills such as food preparation, kitchen safety, hygiene, and teamwork. One of our favorite moments was using the junior chef knife sets to safely prepare fruit and simple snacks. Students were incredibly focused and proud as they practiced cutting with proper technique and independence. These are skills that directly support their transition goals and future independence.\r\n\r\nThe math manipulatives, STEM building sets, tangrams, and LEGO bricks have brought new energy to our math block. Instead of only working on paper, students are building shapes, solving pattern challenges, creating structures, and strengthening problem-solving skills through hands-on exploration. When they first saw the materials, there were big smiles, curiosity, and immediate engagement. The nonfiction books have supported our reading comprehension lessons, helping students practice vocabulary and learn about science topics in an accessible way.\r\n\r\nThe hygiene items, tissues, cleaning supplies, and laminating materials are helping us maintain a safe, organized, and healthy learning environment. Students are also practicing personal care routines using the travel-size toothpaste as part of independent living skills instruction. Next, we will continue expanding our cooking unit by planning simple recipes, budgeting ingredients, and creating visual recipe cards. We will also build on our math lessons by designing STEM challenges that connect to real-life problem solving. For many of my students, having reliable access to snacks or small meals removed a major barrier to learning. Hunger often shows up as distraction, irritability, or disengagement, and once students knew they could count on having something to eat, I saw noticeable changes in their focus, energy, and confidence. They were more willing to participate, more patient with themselves and others, and more capable of sustaining attention during lessons. The classroom atmosphere shifted from one of quiet frustration to one where students felt cared for and ready to learn.\r\n\r\n\r\nOn a personal level, this project transformed the way I approached daily teaching. Having the resources to meet such a basic need allowed me to build deeper relationships with students, because they understood—through action—that I saw them as whole people, not just learners. It reduced my stress as well; instead of trying to stretch limited personal resources to help students who were struggling, I was finally equipped to support them consistently. Knowing that I could offer stability, comfort, and dignity through something as simple as food made me feel more effective and aligned with why I entered education in the first place.\r\n\r\n\r\nIn many ways, the project became a foundation for a more equitable, nurturing classroom. It reminded me that when students' basic needs are met, they thrive—not just academically, but emotionally and socially. And as their teacher, witnessing that growth reaffirmed the importance of advocating for resources that allow every student to feel safe, supported, and capable.","fullyFundedDate":1768752562160,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-supplies/10037569/","projectTitle":"Classroom Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bonetti","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9521764"},{"teacherId":10398778,"projectId":9990718,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our new giant whiteboards and sports resources have become an exciting part of our classroom routine. We use the whiteboards daily during math lessons, where students solve problems, explain their thinking, and learn from one another. When the materials first arrived, students were instantly excited—especially by the giant whiteboards and the basketball foot board—and couldn't wait to start using them.\r\nBecause of your support, students are now able to connect learning with movement and teamwork. Along with strengthening math skills on the whiteboards, students are building coordination, confidence, and cooperation through sports games and basketball drills using the foot board. Many of these students are pursuing long and exciting careers in the healthcare field, and these scrubs are a preview of what's to come. When the day arrived to hand them out, many students were excited and immediately asked to go to the bathroom to try them on.
