The new supplies and resources you have funded will directly enhance their daily learning experience, giving them hands-on opportunities to explore new techniques, experiment with high-quality media, and bring their imaginations to life. For many of our students, art class is the highlight of their school day—a safe, joyful space where their unique voices are celebrated. During the February classroom party, students received a treat bag that included a smencil, mechanical pencils, bookmark, mini play doh, stickers, and a fun food squishy. When it comes to our calming crate, students have taken such initiative with sharing the Koosh Balls, fidgets, and Rubik's cube when choosing to self soothe at various emotional portions of their day. They have learned about the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and how it helps them makes good decisions, the amygdala, which controls are emotions, and the hippocampus, which helps us learn and store memories. \r\n\r\nNot only have they've been practicing identifying situations in which their amygdala takes control but whether it is helpful or not. In dangerous situations it keeps them safe - definitely helpful. But, in stressful situations, like conflict with a friend or being worried about a test, it is not as helpful. \r\n\r\nWhen students can identify which type of response they're having, especially if it's not an emergency or dangerous situation, they can use coping skills to help calm their amygdalas and allow their PFC to be more in control. The hope is, the more they practice healthy coping skills (breathing, coloring or writing, or using sensory tools) when they aren't stressed, they'll be better able to remember them and use them when they are stressed. And, hopefully, use their PFC to help them make better choices to deal with their stress (talk it out, use I-messages, or other de-escalation strategies). \r\n\r\nWith the materials from Donors Choose, students made sensory bottles using previously donated water bottles, water, and the donors' items (glitter/sequins, food coloring, and glycerin). The funnels helped keep the process cleaner, and the hot glue-gun allowed me to seal the lids to the bottles for safety. \r\n\r\nIt was such a unique way to cap off our unit on the brain and stress response. They had so much fun making them and loved the variety of glitter, sequins, and colors for the water. \r\n\r\nIn addition, students in beginning Crochet Club got to try new yarns and start making\r\nhot pads/potholders. Students typically use acrylic yarn at first because it is inexpensive. However, acrylic yarn is not a great material for pot holders since they would melt. With the cotton yarn we were provided via Donors Choose, the more advanced students could start making the hot pads/potholders. They loved the colors and the different texture. Plus it helped some of them learn better because the stitch definition of the cotton yarn made it easier to see the stitches.","fullyFundedDate":1768747093740,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-bottles-and-crocheting-as-coping/10036152/","projectTitle":"Sensory Bottles and Crocheting as Coping Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. King","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8148446_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1634860797505","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsking-counseling-littles-makes-me-happy"},{"teacherId":10403847,"projectId":10018509,"letterContent":"Our new flexible seating has truly transformed our classroom environment!
