I did not tell the students that roll-up keyboards were about to be a part of our music classroom. The day the keyboards arrived, I left the boxes sitting in front of the classroom, and all the students were curious as to what was in them. I told the students that we received a donation of roll-up keyboards and they all enthusiastically asked if they could play them. We were working on reading short melodies, so we decided to learn how to play the melodies on our new instruments. Soon, I was asked by the students if it was okay to make their own melodies. And just like that, off went my young student composers! All the students were excited to share the melodies that they created, and they also started to recognize familiar melodies from other songs as they experimented. \r\n\r\nThis creative spark was ignited thanks to your generous donation. The students have been so eager to play melodies and create new melodies that I have altered my lesson plans to allow more time for expressive exploration.
