Students leave their textbooks in the classroom, so being able to have these images in their notes has been helpful as they study at home. The complex details and intricate anatomical structures would otherwise lose clarity in grayscale. \r\nMeanwhile, in honors biology, students have worked with color copies of text sets with images that provide dense information. We received the collection of novels from authors with backgrounds that reflect the diversity of our class. Generally, students borrow books from the school and must use post-its to take notes and then return the book to the school at the end of the unit. I informed students that they are allowed to write in these books and when we are done using the books for literature study, they get to take the books home to add to their personal library. The smiles on their faces were priceless. \r\n\r\nThese texts were especially selected to connect to students in meaningful ways. For instance, one of my students is a first generation immigrant from Nigeria. When we began reading Seedfolks, she inquired about whether one of the characters referred to herself as Romanian-American because she calls herself Nigerian-American.
