I work with a team of teachers to design and implement a Biology curriculum based on the Next Generation Science Standards and the principles of Competency-Based Learning. Students are working on scientific skills such as analyzing data, developing models, and constructing scientific explanations based on evidence. In order to master these skills, students need to be able to examine exemplars, share their work, and explain their thinking to their peers. The current tools in our classroom, a basic projector and dry erase board, lack the flexibility and responsiveness we need on a daily basis. With the IPEVO document camera to project articles, graphs and models, students can practice analyzing data and revising models together. My students are also excited to project their work and writing for the entire class to see. Sharing student work with the document camera helps my students build pride in their work and strengthens the meta-cognition skills that are so essential to their success in high school.
