Your investment in our classroom has provided vital tools that bridge digital technology and tactile engineering.\r\n\r\n My students are a vibrant group of natural-born problem solvers. They are utilizing these new resources to discover that STEM and Art (STEAM) are not separate worlds, but rather two halves of the same creative process by combining \"high-tech\" tools with \"low-tech\" craft supplies. Here is how the materials are being used in our classroom:\r\n\r\n TONOR Microphones & micro:bit Guides: Students use the TONOR podcast microphones to master communication and literacy through animation voiceovers and adding voice to their VR animation projects. Also, the micro:bit gear and user guides introduce them directly to computational thinking and logic.\r\n\r\n Cardboard Sheets & EVA Foam: Serving as the \"bones\" of our inventions, students use the corrugated cardboard sheets and multi-colored EVA foam sheets to engage in rapid prototyping in their microbit projects.\r\n\r\n Art Supplies (Scissors, Glue, Origami Paper): These materials act as the essential \"connectors\" in our classroom. Utilizing high-quality multipurpose scissors, Elmer's washable glue sticks, and Sax origami paper ensures no student's project is sidelined by a lack of basic supplies.\r\n\r\n When encountering these resources, the students instantly channeled their incredible \"maker spirit\"—that internal spark of curiosity that drives them to ask, \"How does this work?\" and \"Can I make it better?\". Though they come from diverse backgrounds with varying previous access to technology, they all share a relentless drive to share their voices and see their ideas take physical shape using these new materials. \r\n\r\n With these tools now fully integrated into our daily routine, our next steps focus on deeper execution and technical development:\r\nStructural Engineering: Students will continue using the craft foam and cardboard sheets to actively develop their spatial reasoning and structural engineering skills.\r\nPhysical Prototyping: They will take their abstract digital coding concepts and physically construct them into wearable or moveable tangible objects.\r\nVoice and Artistic Expression: Students will continue expanding their literacy skills by capturing oral reports through the TONOR microphones, while using art supplies to add fine motor development and artistic expression so their technical projects feel personal and polished.\r\n\r\n Thank you for giving our students the resources to see their ideas take physical shape!","fullyFundedDate":1771686549708,"projectUrl":"project/full-stream-ahead-integrating-audio-tec/10067542/","projectTitle":"Full-Stream Ahead: Integrating Audio Tech & Engineering","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7662450"},{"teacherId":7929576,"projectId":10103550,"letterContent":"Thank you for your donation of surge protectors outlets and toaster ovens to help my students who are second language learners. These crafts gave my English Learners a comfortable way to practice new vocabulary and follow directions while creating something they were proud of. It was amazing to see students who are usually quiet during lessons suddenly leading their groups, showing their classmates how to fold paper or explaining the symbolism behind the \"Year of the Horse\" decorations.\r\n\r\nThis project did exactly what I hoped: it made every student feel like they belong in our diverse community. Seeing the pride on their faces as they took their crafts home to show their families was priceless. We are currently using the organizing table, storage bins, and rolling cart to manage a classroom that finally feels like a professional engineering lab. A standout moment occurred last week during our \"Light Up the Room\" challenge. Students used the mobile whiteboard and magnets to map out their logic gates before diving into the hardware. It was incredible to watch a group of students successfully use the alligator clips, battery holder packs, and AAA batteries to power a circuit they had designed. With the new computer mice, they were able to pivot to their screens with the precision needed to refine their 3D models, which are now being brought to life with our vibrant new 3D printer filament.\r\n\r\nThe day the materials arrived felt like a celebration of their potential. My students were absolutely buzzing with excitement—especially when they saw that the project cared for the \"whole child.\" While one group was mesmerized by the 3D filament spooling into a physical object, another was thrilled to see the soccer and volleyballs. One student perfectly captured the mood, saying, \"It feels like someone really wants us to be real inventors!\" The new equipment hasn't just provided tools; it has fostered a deep sense of responsibility. They take immense pride in \"resetting\" the storage bins and rolling cart at the end of the day, proving that when you treat students like professionals, they rise to the occasion.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has bridged the gap between imagination and reality, allowing my students to see that engineering is not just a subject in a book, but a collaborative, physical, and deeply creative way to interact with the world.","fullyFundedDate":1759424469959,"projectUrl":"project/organize-to-create-a-place-for-every-id/9774889/","projectTitle":"Organize to Create: A Place for Every Idea","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7662450"},{"teacherId":7662450,"projectId":7888766,"letterContent":"Your support has turned our classroom into a laboratory of hands-on innovation. In a recent classroom moment, I watched a group of students use the sewing cabinets to measure and cut fabric for a prototype, while another student sat at the monitor coding a sequence of lights that would eventually be integrated into the textile.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe \"First Look\" Reaction\r\nWhen the boxes first arrived, the classroom felt like a holiday morning! The reaction was a mix of awe and immediate curiosity. One student, seeing the sewing cabinets and fabric, said, \"I didn't know we could actually make real things in science class.\" Another student was mesmerized by the vibrant colors of the fabric, realizing their design were finally going to become physical objects they could hold. The sense of professional-grade equipment gave them a newfound \"maker\" identity and a serious boost in confidence.\r\n\r\nOur Next Steps\r\nOur journey is just beginning! The next step for my students is the \"Science & Art Showcase.\" * The Designers: They will finish their sewn projects, incorporating 3D-printed elements and coded components.\r\n\r\nBy bridging the gap between a needle and a line of code, you have helped my students understand that technology is a tool for expression, and engineering is a way to bring their wildest dreams to life.","fullyFundedDate":1701090652272,"projectUrl":"project/engineering-and-designing-a-guide-to-s/7888766/","projectTitle":"Engineering and Designing: A Guide To STEM Stitching and Beyond","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7662450"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50878","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":578,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":34,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":32,"percentMultiracialImputed":15,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":42.0,"schoolId":50878,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Washington Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Washington Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/honolulu-school-district/washington-middle-school/50878"}
